Position Title

Genetic Counseling Assistant

Westwood Administration - East

Position Summary / Career Interest:

Genetic Counselor Assistant (GCA) role is integral in providing high-quality care to patients and families undergoing genetic services and molecular testing. The GCA will work under the supervision of Genetic Counselor Manager, contributing significantly to various aspects of our service through effective organization, communication, and administrative support.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Genetic Testing Coordination and Patient Facilitation • Serving as the primary liaison between patients, genetic counselors, and laboratories for genetic testing. • Coordinating and scheduling genetic testing, ensuring timely specimen collection and processing. • Verifying and entering demographic information into the genetic testing portal for new patient referrals. • Performing initial insurance screenings and identifying self-pay or high-risk insurance plans. • Connecting patients with financial counselors at genetic testing laboratories for billing information. • Maintaining a log of all genetic testing samples and reporting on their status.
  • Patient Interaction, Education, and Support: • Providing clear, compassionate communication and education to patients about the genetic testing process. • Gathering and recording patient histories and consent forms. • Notifying patients of the status of their genetic testing and appointments as directed. • Following up with patients post-testing to address concerns and facilitating connections to additional resources or specialty care.
  • Administrative, Clinical, and Operational Support: • Preparing and managing patient files specific to genetic testing. • Handling correspondence with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and laboratories. • Assisting genetic counselors in preparing for counseling sessions and coordinating patient care. • Maintaining an up-to-date database of genetic tests and laboratory contacts. • Entering and updating appointment information in patient databases. • Assisting team members and performing other duties as assigned. • Exhibiting excellent customer service as the main contact person for logistics of genetic testing.
  • Quality Assurance and Process Improvement: • Ensuring adherence to all genetic testing protocols and procedures. • Participating in quality improvement initiatives to enhance the genetic testing process. • Collaborating with healthcare team members to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree biology, genetics, health administration, or a related field OR
  • Associates Degree and two years of expereince OR
  • 4 or more years experience in healthcare or laboratory setting in leu of education

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Registered RN with 1 year of experience
  • Experience in a genetics specialty
  • Proficient in medical software, electronic health records, and database management.

Preferred Licensure and Certification

  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) - Multi-State - State Board of Nursing

Required Language Skills

  • Fluent English -

Knowledge Requirements

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • • Exceptional computer skills including Advanced Keyboarding skills, proficient in computer languages such as outlook, Microsoft Word and Excel
  • • Team-oriented mindset and ability to work collaboratively.
  • • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced medical environment
  • • Flexibility to adapt to changing procedures and protocols.
