Position Summary

The Research Assistant will support the genetic counselors (GC) in carrying out clinical, Newborn Screening Program, and research duties. All responsibilities will be performed under the supervision of a licensed provider, with appropriate training provided.

Newborn Screening Program:

  • Support the NBS program by compiling, interpreting, distributing, and communicating all test results received by the Division.
  • Maintain and update the patient database to ensure accurate and up-to-date records.

Clinic and Patient Support:

  • Review all scheduled referrals and maintain the urgent patient waitlist.
  • Communicate with families and medical providers to request additional medical records and history.
  • Obtain and discuss Benefits Investigations (BI) and assist with prior authorizations and peer-to-peer reviews for genetic testing.
  • Interface with referral testing and genetic laboratory companies regarding patient sample collection, test requisition forms, status updates, and additional requested records.
  • Aid in the coordination of specialty clinics, including Angelman, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Lysosomal Storage Disease, and others.

Clinical Research Projects:

  • Participate in clinical research projects by collecting and maintaining data.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Management Preferences

  • Background knowledge in college-level genetics.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in genetic counseling.
  • Excellent communication skills for writing and communicating with families, medical providers, and laboratories.
  • Proficient computer skills.
