Under general direction, the General Maintenance Mechanic performs a wide variety of maintenance and repair work on campus facilities and vehicles at the semi-skilled to skilled level; performs related duties as required.
 

Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Performs a variety of plumbing maintenance, repair, and installations, including water heaters, drinking fountains, eye wash stations, faucets, fixtures, and valves. Responds to and addresses leaks, sewer backups and other urgent plumbing issues. Replaces faulty components such as heating elements, thermostats, and gas valves;
  • Performs general maintenance on HVAC systems, including troubleshooting, filter changes, coil cleaning, and belt replacements. Services and repairs equipment such as exhaust fans, air handlers, and pumps;
  • Responds to and assists with troubleshooting and repair of fire alarm systems, automatic and security doors; 
  • Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical circuits up to 277 volts. Replaces switches, receptacles, circuit breakers and lighting fixtures and components;
  • Checks water and irrigation pipes for leaks and pressure; makes repairs when necessary.
  • Repairs and maintains pumps, piping, gaskets, strainers, and filters in swimming pools; monitors and maintains correct chemical balance of water;
  • Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on gasoline and diesel motor vehicles, motorized grounds equipment, and electric utility carts and vehicles; spot welds as necessary;
  • Hangs and repairs doors; repairs, assembles and moves furniture; services automatic openers; installs and rekeys locks;
  • Builds and repairs items of wood or steel such as partitions, counters, cabinets, shelves, frames, walls, and scaffolds;
  • Paints interior and exterior surfaces of buildings; scrapes and sands surfaces; repairs plaster and other wall surfaces;
  • Replaces window glass;
  • Lays, regrouts or repairs tile on floors, walls or countertops; lays carpet;
  • Coordinates work with and assists other maintenance workers and vendors as required;
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment (lighting and electrical components, plumbing parts and various materials); 
  • Responds to emergency calls to ensure the safety of systems and facilities;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Experience working in a related field.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to:
    • Adapt to changing work priorities.
    • Meeting deadlines and schedules.
  • Demonstrated skill in:
    • Building and repair of partitions, counters, shelves, etc.
    • Painting and performing flooring work.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance and repair.
    • Operations and servicing of gasoline and diesel motor vehicles, motorized gardening equipment, electric carts and wheelchairs.
    • Procedures used to paint and install flooring.
  • One (1) year of job related experience.
  • Demonstrated evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds in a community college environment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Working hours: Monday - Friday, 12:00pm - 9:00pm. Hours may vary according to the assignment.
  • A valid California driver's license is required.
  • Ability to pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a full-time, 12-month, classified bargaining unit position. Starting date: as soon  as possible. Range 17 of the CSEA Salary Schedule, with a starting salary of Step A, $5,068.  Excellent benefit package.

Being able and ready to work onsite at a Chaffey facility or location is an essential function of this job. Being able and ready to work in-person with Chaffey students, Chaffey employees, or other members of the Chaffey community/Chaffey partners/Chaffey contractors is an essential function of this job.
