As a Project Manager, for GEMS Startup, you will work closely with First, Middle and Last Mile AMXL stakeholders to successfully deliver projects that allow Amazon to continue to honor our customer delivery promise. You will be able to immerse yourself in program and project management activities that will continuously challenge you.

This role requires up to 80% travel and availability to work from a corporate office when not traveling. Candidates should either live near or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance of the office. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Key job responsibilities

As a Project Manager on this team, you plan, implement, coordinate and track to completion all activities necessary for partner execution teams to successfully launch new builds, retrofits and expansions in support of the First, Middle and Last Mile network. Generally speaking, this role is responsible for ensuring the installation of all finishing aspects and equipment that make a building functional to process volume for our customers. We are seeking an experienced Project Manager who can drive project execution, standardization and process improvement. Critical to this role is the ability to build partnerships and lead through influence with contractors, installation vendors, construction and engineering teams along with other stakeholders to meet project milestones. You collaborate with all project teams to meet and exceed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). You support program initiative goals by delivering projects of varying complexity. Projects may overlap in different regions. You are required to travel across applicable regions for this role. The amount of travel may vary based on the project type and the time of the year. The ability to travel is needed throughout the year and should be expected to reach up to 80% at peak times to support our customers. Key competencies of this position include controllership to ensure your contracted resources deliver work on time and within safety, quality and budget requirements.

A day in the life

Each day you represent GEMS in managing projects that vary in complexity, time and budget. You own projects from kick-off to close-out while also executing program level initiatives to better the organization. You are expected to work at pace with high levels of ambiguity and little oversight, whilst demonstrating ownership throughout the project life cycle. You lead by influencing stakeholders through a cadence of business meetings, business meetings, site visits and technical discussions. You are expected to physically be on site to meet project goals and roll up your sleeves with a Bias for Action to get things done and support project execution. Your scope is dependent on upstream partners such as construction, engineering and design teams. You execute your scope in a construction environment. Daily tasks include coordination with vendors and contractors, removing barriers, working across teams, communicating project status and risk, using internal and external software and driving results. You are expected to lead by example when on site, communicating across stakeholders up to PMO.

So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
