Overview
The Gas Technician III is responsible for supporting the construction maintenance and operation of the Citys gas distribution system. The Gas Technician III supervises a crew that constructs and installs gas mains which involve pipe fitting welding making taps installing services making repairs fusion of poly pipe construction of offsets and any other related work as required such as responding to gas emergencies.
Responsibilities
· Use small hand tools tapping and stopple equipment. Performs semi-skilled and common labor work such as paint andor wrap pipe cutting and threading pipe pipe-fitting and assists in other pipeline maintenance as required frequently lifting up to 100 pounds with assistance
· Operates backhoe trenching machine and other semi-heavy maintenance and construction equipment
· Inspect equipment and makes adjustments and minor repairs to maintain equipment in proper operating condition
· Performs clerical tasks such as completing required forms used to document inspections from work orders in accordance with Department procedures andor regulatory requirements
· Reviews all paperwork prepared by subordinates
· Operates a l-ton truck 2 12 ton crew truck winch truck dump truck pickup truck Pole and Float trailers ditchers air compressors welding machine and equipment
· Performs the planning and supervision of work crew
· Reviews and monitors work progress of crew ensuring work is being conducted in accordance with company procedures
· Performs plastic pipe fusion with the use of poly fusion and electro fusion equipment and operates line locating equipment and volt meters for taking pipe-to-soil potentials
· Performs intensive manual labor tasks including digging and backfilling ditches installing pipe shoveling up to 15 pounds of weight standingwalking up to 5 hours at one time continuous bending stooping and climbing out of ditches
· Installs or repairs mains services and meter loops removes andor exchange gas meters as part of maintenance work tasks
· Checks for stopped meters and houseline pressures using water manometer
· Serves as primary welder involved in the construction and maintenance of gas distribution facilities by performing pipe fitting and welding Performs electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding to cut and fit pipe ranging from 12 to 12 in diameter
· Welds stopple fittings on gas mains and operates stopple equipment to make hot taps andor valve off sections of pipe
· Performs leak surveys using leak detection equipment such as combustible gas indicator CGI or GMI and RMLD
· Complete proper forms log books and documentation on maps
· Investigate gas odor complaints and utilize gas leak detection equipment in order to locate and pinpoint gas leaks
· Evaluates severity of leaks and makes recommendations to the General Foreman for repair priority
· Monitors DOT inspections on all gas regulator stations regulators relief valves key valves and gas main pressure tests
· Ensures DOT regulations are being followed and logs and records are maintained up to date
· Monitors gas pressure and odorization for the City Gas Distribution system
· Analyzes problems makes and supervises needed adjustments
· Maintains appropriate DOT records and reports findings and results to Gas Pressure Inspector
· Serves as primary welder involved in the construction and maintenance of gas distribution facilities by performing pope fitting and welding Performs electric arc any oxy-acetylene welding to cut and fit pipe ranging from 12 to 12 in diameter
· Welds stopple fittings on gas mains and operates stopple equipment to make hot taps andor valve off sections of pipe
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
· Non exempt - Full Time - Non rotating 40-hour work week Monday - Friday 700 am - 400 pm
· Must be available to work additional hours as needed
· Flexibility to work evenings weekends and holidays is a schedule requirement
· In the event of an emergency employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications
· High School DiplomaGED
· Minimum of five 5 years of experience
Licenses and Certifications Required
· A valid drivers license is required successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas drivers license within 90 days of hire
Required within six 6 months of hire
· Texas Class A Commercial Drivers License with Air Brakes endorsement
· Certified as a competent welder by the Gas Department in both Oxy-acetylene and electric arc welding
· Certified to fuse Poly pipe

Basis of Rating
