BASIC PURPOSE

Under immediate or general supervision, the individual will perform work on one of three teams in the Parks Maintenance Department; Parks, Right-of-ways, or Mow Crew. It is intended that temporary employees are assigned to one of the three teams for the duration of their seasonal employment. The location and nature of the work will vary depending on assignment.

This recruitment is specifically for the Right-of-Way team. The Right-of-Way maintenance team is responsible for landscape maintenance of City owned medians, round-a-bouts and right of way landscapes. Duties include mowing, edging, integrated pest management, pruning, litter removal and other landscape maintenance activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements reflect the general duties and responsibilities of this classification, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing. The incumbent is also expected to meet the technical performance standards established for this position and the Citys standards for interpersonal and team behaviors and customer contacts. Incumbents may also perform other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or to meet current workload needs.

  • Performs all types of grounds and landscape maintenance such as mowing, edging, pruning, weeding, spreading chip, blowing hard surfaces, etc.
  • Uses various types of hand tools and small gas-powered equipment such as blowers, pressure washers, edgers, hedge trimmers, line trimmers, etc.
  • Assists with restroom cleaning, emptying trash cans and picking up litter.
  • Responsible for public and personal safety while working in the field through the safe use and maintenance of power equipment.
  • Provides customer service for Lacey parks visitors.

QUALIFICATIONS

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSE(S):

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Must pass a background investigation.
  • Must have a valid Washington State driver license and a driving record acceptable to the City and the Citys insurance carrier.
  • Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
  • Must maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to work rules and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated basic mechanical aptitude.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Parks, facilities, landscape maintenance, or custodial experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment:

  • Typical assignments are outdoors, normally requiring work in inclement weather at cold, hot, dirty, wet, noisy, or cramped work sites.
  • The work involves physical labor, physical dexterity, and mechanical aptitude.
  • Duties may require exposure to chemicals, toxic gases, raw sewage, or other environmental hazards.

Physical Abilities:

  • Hearing, speaking, or otherwise communicating to exchange information in person or on the phone.
  • Perform physical labor associated with the essential duties of the position.
  • Work in the field in all weather conditions and over rough terrain.
  • Lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects up to fifty (50) lbs. Some assistance is available to mitigate the heaviest lifting.
  • Bending, kneeling/crouching, reaching, climbing and crawling.
  • Operating equipment; electric, gas, and various hand tools.
  • Grasp and hold and effectively use assigned personal protective equipment and tools for the position.

Temporary/seasonal positions are not eligible for health insurance, other insurances, holidays, vacation, and/or other paid leave benefits provided to regular full-time positions; however, they are covered by Workers Compensation Insurance. The City will comply with RCW 49.46.210 and WACs 296-128-600 through 296-128-700 in providing paid sick leave to all covered employees (non-exempt).

Social Security and Federal withholding taxes will be deducted from wages.

Temporary/seasonal positions are eligible for membership and will participate in the Department of Retirement Systems.

  • Please note, that Part-time and On-call positions are not eligible for membership in the Department of Retirement Systems.
