Job Summary/Basic Function

About the position:

The Head Men's/Women's Tennis Coach is responsible for leading a program that has enjoyed a rich tradition in the PSAC and NCAA Division II. The Coach will direct all phases of the tennis program, by establishing and maintaining a high standard of excellence, which includes recruiting academically qualified student-athletes, scheduling, scouting, conditioning, supervising the coaching staff, managing the program budget, generating revenue, and other duties assigned. In addition, the Head Coach is responsible for making sure that all duties are executed in compliance with NCAA, PSAC and institutional regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Report to the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and assume responsibility for development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the team's program. Specific duties are listed below

  • Advise student-athletes and staff of applicable intercollegiate athletic rules, regulations, and University policies and ensure compliance of such regulations.
  • Evaluate performance of assistant coaches.
  • Develop and conduct pre-season, in-season and off-season training and conditioning programs for the team.
  • Recruit student-athletes.
  • Inform student-athletes of academic and other matters pertaining to their enrollment and educational progress.
  • Plan and direct athletic skill development for student-athletes.
  • Ensure appropriate safety measures are observed when conducting team activities.
  • Work with the Director of Athletics on the selection and scheduling of team contests.
  • Cooperate with the University physicians and Athletic Trainers to ensure student-athletes receive proper medical and physical training services.
  • Work within budgetary guidelines established by the Director of Athletics.
  • Coordinate all activities in preparation for scheduled competition.
  • Attend all team practices and home and away contests.
  • Monitor student-athlete academic performance and implement team, athletic department, and University measures to support their academic performance.
  • Assume responsibility to student-athlete compliance with all applicable rules and regulations.
  • Assist the Director of Athletics in resolving cases where a student-athlete violates an applicable regulation.
  • Work with alumni student groups University administration and community groups to seek support for the team.
  • Submit monthly work schedules to the Director of Athletics and comply with schedule once approved.
  • Attend appropriate athletic departmental staff meetings.
  • Ensure student-athletes participation in NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills programs.
  • Assist the Director of Athletics in fund-raising activities in accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreements for non-faculty coaches.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Two years of successful experience coaching tennis at high school, intercollegiate or professional level.

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting the welfare and academic success of student-athletes.

  • Demonstrated evidence of the ability to work effectively with student-athletes of divers races and cultures.

  • Demonstrated success in the athletic development of student athletes.

  • Knowledge of and successful experience in:

  • Recruiting prospective student athletes.

  • Supervising staff.

  • Managing budgets.

  • Evidence of complying fully with NCAA, PSAC regulations.

  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.

  • Commitment to inclusive practices and working with diverse student populations.

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Successful interview.

  • Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful:

  • Tennis coaching experience at the intercollegiate level.

  • Head coaching experience.

  • Experience generating revenue through various fundraising and alumni engagement activities.

  • Master's degree.
