Summary

The University Counselor primarily provides direct service hours to students in the form of individual therapy, group therapy, and consultation hours. Counselors are also responsible for attending staff meetings, obtaining appropriate supervision, working towards licensure or maintaining licensure once obtained, and engaging in opportunities for increased education.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position is primarily responsible to:

  • Provides individual and group counseling for Taylor students. Obtains appropriate intake/diagnostic information and develop treatment goals.
  • Maintains progress notes and provides appropriate initial assessment and termination summaries for each client.
  • Provides appropriate consultation and referral as needed.
  • Obtains appropriate releases for on and off campus communication as needed.
  • Appropriately maintains confidentiality.
  • Appropriately maintains security of client files, individual offices, and the counseling center as a whole.
  • Appropriately seeks supervision regarding cases, and regularly engages with other counselors on staff to gain additional resources and perspectives.
  • Continues to engage in learning opportunities through online resources, reading books and journal articles, and seeking resources from other counselors in the counseling center.
  • Appropriately assesses suicidal ideation and self-harm, creates safety plans as needed, and consults with Counseling Center Director or Assistant Director.
  • Discuss fully with the Director or Assistant Director any crisis situation that may lead to hospital admission, involuntary removal from school, need to inform parents. A plan will be developed from there.
  • Engage in additional University programs and presentations per semester.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A minimum of a Masters degree in counseling, psychology, or social work. A professional license (or working toward licensure) in counseling, psychology or social work.

Skills and Competencies

  • Expressing compassion while maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with others from varying cultures and backgrounds.
  • Understanding of a variety of work environments (gained through professional experience or education), and ability to articulate differences in professional work contexts.
  • Ability to represent Taylor University well to internal and external stakeholders and guests.
  • Excellent management skills with the ability to mentor students in their professional development.
  • Competent in using various computer software, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Collaborative team player who can also work independently.
