Position Summary

The College Police Officer performs a wide variety of duties involved in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes and violations of college policy; issues citations; participates in and conducts a variety of campus police-related investigations; makes arrests; and performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the campus police department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

At a minimum, the essential functions of this position shall include:

  • Monitors student gatherings on campus such as athletic events, etc. to ensure security and safety for the students, participants, and attendees.
  • Locks outer doors and checks buildings and hallways after hours for signs of unusual activity.
  • Issues citations to violators of campus parking regulations.
  • Monitors students and visitors to ensure compliance with college policies and regulations.
  • Completes written offense reports immediately after an incident. All reports are written in clear, concise and standard English.
  • Logs all activities in a daily log book.
  • Makes scheduled tours or buildings and grounds by vehicle or walking to ensure security and watching for conditions that could result in injury or loss.
  • Reports to supervisor or police authorities any unusual or suspicious activities or conditions.
  • Reports to supervisor any incidence of student, visitor, driver or employee actions, which could result in injury or loss to others.
  • Reads and follows guidelines set forth in "Manual of Rules & Regulations" for Campus Police.
  • Recertifies on firearms range at least once annually.
  • Lifts, carries and moves heavy objects within safety limits.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Meet minimum standards of an Alabama Peace Officer.
  • Valid Alabama Drivers license.
  • Displays a courteous manner when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to tolerate considerable walking and 12-hour shifts.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • APOST certified.
  • CDL license.
  • Completion of CPR certification or willingness and ability to complete CPR course.

Sick Leave

Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers Retirement System of Alabama.

Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:

  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
