Summary

The Manager of Operations is responsible for the overall management, planning, and execution of operational functions at the Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center. This position oversees facility maintenance, grounds management, equipment operations, recreational programming logistics, and safety compliance. The Manager ensures the efficient, safe, and sustainable operation of the center while supporting public programs, events, and environmental stewardship initiatives.

Knowledge & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversee and manage the maintenance of all facilities, grounds, roads, trails, and infrastructure to ensure safe and effective operations.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor preventative maintenance programs for buildings, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and management of wildlife areas, including coordination of mowing, controlled burns, and habitat preservation efforts.
  • Direct and oversee operations of campground facilities, cabins, and recreational areas to ensure year-round usability and customer satisfaction.
  • Manage scheduling, coordination, and execution of all recreational activities, including hunting, fishing, camping, biking, and equestrian use.
  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, and safety compliance of specialized areas such as firing ranges.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations related to pesticide use, environmental safety, and occupational health.
  • Maintain accurate records related to maintenance, inspections, inventory, and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and manage operational budgets, including procurement of supplies, equipment, and contracted services.
  • Establish and enforce safety protocols for staff, volunteers, and visitors, including proper use of equipment and hazardous materials.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate operational staff and volunteers engaged in maintenance and program support activities.
  • Coordinate operational support for educational programs, public events, and community outreach initiatives.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies necessary for daily operations.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for operational issues, ensuring timely resolution and continuous improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises operations staff, maintenance personnel, and volunteers.
  • Responsible for training, scheduling, and performance management, in accordance with JCC policies.
  • Provides leadership, coaching, and professional development opportunities for team members.

Minimum & Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications

Education Minimum: Associate's degree in Environmental Science, Facilities Management, Agriculture, Natural Resources, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Experience Minimum:

  • Three to five (3-5) years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management, operations, land management, or a related field.
  • Experience supervising staff and managing operations in an outdoor, environmental, or recreational setting preferred.
  • Experience with farm, construction, or land management equipment and pesticide application required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • North Carolina Pesticide Applicator's License (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe)
