Description

Summary

The Academic and Career Exploration Coach provides comprehensive academic advising and career development support to help students identify, plan, and achieve their educational and career goals. This position delivers a coordinated approach to student success by integrating academic coaching with career exploration, particularly for students who are undecided. The Coach works closely with students to explore programs of study, clarify interests and strengths, and connect academic choices to career opportunities. Through individualized coaching, the position supports goal setting, development of structured academic plans, and course selection that promotes exploration while ensuring progress toward degree completion.

In addition, the Coach connects students to career development resources, to include: online job search platforms, career assessments, workshops, and career fairs. The position collaborates with faculty and campus partners to embed career development into the student experience and strengthen pathways from education to employment. This role also supports the Director of Career Services in the planning and implementation of departmental goals and initiatives that enhance student success, persistence, and career readiness.

Knowledge & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

Academic Advising & Coaching

  • Provide holistic academic advising and career exploration coaching to students, with an emphasis on those who are undecided.
  • Guide students in developing individualized academic plans that align with career goals and support timely program completion.
  • Advise on course selection in accordance with program requirements and transfer pathways.
  • Monitor student progress and provide proactive outreach and interventions to support retention, persistence, and completion.

Career Development & Exploration

  • Deliver career coaching services, including career assessments, interpretation of results, and career exploration strategies.
  • Help students connect academic programs to career opportunities, including labor market information, employment trends, and transfer options.
  • Prepare students for career success through guidance on job search strategies, resume development, interviewing skills, and professional readiness.
  • Maintain knowledge of workforce trends and emerging careers

Programming & Outreach

  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate workshops, classroom presentations, and group sessions on career exploration, and career readiness topics.
  • Support the development and implementation of career-related events, including career fairs, employer information sessions, and networking opportunities.
  • Promote career services resources and increase student engagement through outreach and communication efforts.
  • Work closely with Student Support and Instructional divisions to ensure a coordinated approach to student success.

Program Support

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student interactions, academic plans, and outcomes using institutional systems.
  • Support the Director of Career Services in the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of departmental goals and initiatives.
  • Stay current with best practices, technologies, and trends in academic advising, career development, and higher education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position supervises the assigned work-study

Qualifications

Education

Minimum: Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in human resource development, education, business, training and development, or related field.

Experience

Minimum: Three years of experience working in higher education, human resources, career services or other related educational setting.

Additional Information

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and internet usage. Familiarity with Focus2, Handshake, O*Net and/or other career resources are a plus.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Career Development Facilitator (CDF) preferred
