    Picture your first week: you’re paired with an experienced railcar pro, learning safe jacking procedures, practicing basic stick techniques, and assisting with coupler and lever work. Under close supervision, you’ll perform limited welds and progress toward certification in 1G flat and 2G horizontal railcar positions—while contributing to real repairs that keep freight moving.

    Core responsibilities

    • Assist with general railcar repair operations and shop maintenance tasks
    • Support material handling during active repairs
    • Operate designated shop equipment and mechanical hand tools
    • Perform basic cutting and welding; complete supervised welding assignments
    • Develop foundational stick welding knowledge through on‑the‑job experience
    • Execute routine maintenance and build core car-repair competencies
    • Remove/replace uncoupling levers and brake levers
    • Remove/dismantle couplers
    • Safely jack cars for access and repair
    • Perform supervised repairs on railcar truck assemblies
    • Remove and update AEI (Automatic Equipment Identification) tags
    • Work toward certification in 1G (flat) and 2G (horizontal) railcar welding

    Qualifications

    • Experience level: 3 years
    • Preferred experience (1+ year each): Mechanic work, Hand tools, MIG welding, Brake repair
