POSITION: Food Service Worker
DEPARTMENT: Food Service
REPORTS TO: Director of Food Services
Job Summary
The Food Service Worker plays a vital role in the School City of East Chicago's Food Service Department's mission to provide nutritious, high-quality meals to our students. Under the guidance of our P.R.R.R.R. philosophy (Putting students first, Respecting students, Respecting ourselves, Respecting the meals served, and Recognizing regulations), you will be responsible for preparing, serving, and maintaining a clean, safe dining environment.
We are looking for dedicated individuals who take pride in nourishing the next generation.
Key Responsibilities
- Meal Preparation: Assist in the preparation of a variety of foods, including main entrees, salads, and snacks, following standardized recipes and portion controls.
- Service & Interaction: Serve students and staff in a friendly, professional manner, ensuring every student feels respected and welcomed.
- Sanitation & Safety: Maintain a clean and organized workstation. Perform dishwashing, sweeping, mopping, and equipment cleaning in compliance with ServSafe and local health department standards.
- Inventory & Storage: Assist in receiving and stocking food deliveries; ensure proper rotation (FIFO) and temperature monitoring of food items.
- Point of Sale (POS): Operate the cafeteria register, accurately accounting for meals served and managing student accounts as needed.
- Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to all USDA National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP) guidelines and regulations.
- Assigned Duties: Any additional reasonable task assigned by management
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Certification: Ability to obtain or maintain a Food Handler's Permit (ServSafe
certification is a plus).
- Experience: Previous experience in a kitchen, cafeteria, or customer service environment preferred, but we are willing to train candidates with a great attitude.
- Skills: * Ability to perform basic math for recipe scaling and cash handling.
o Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
o Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet strict meal service deadlines.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods (4-6 hours).
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs (cases of milk, produce, or bulk ingredients).
- Comfortable working in varying temperatures (kitchen heat and walk-in coolers/freezers).
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
SALARY RANGE: Salary based on qualification and experience
