ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - Food and Nutrition Services FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICES 12 Month Position SALARY RANGE: $88,000.00 - $93,000.00

Job Summary Under the direction of the Director Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), assist in planning and directing the operations and activities of the Districts Nutrition Services department. Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff, perform related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities The Assistant Director is responsible for the following areas of operation.

  1. Assist in planning and supervising the operations of the Nutrition Center, including the review of school site cafeterias, nutritional education programs, storage, transport, and delivery of food products, and purchasing and accounting functions. Assure compliance with federal and State laws, regulations, and policies.

  2. In the absence of the Director, serve as the Nutrition Services Director, performing all required duties, including supervision of department operations.

  3. Supervise directly and evaluate the performance of assigned staff, which will include the following areas and position titles: • Payroll compensation processor • Warehouse Supervisor • School Lunch Consultants • District Supervisors • Culinary Supervisors

  4. Assist the Director in supervising other staff in the conduct of daily operations and/or special projects as required, by giving direction to monitoring and guiding employees in the discharge of assigned duties.

  5. Administer and manage the Bridgeport Public Schools Summer Food Service Program.

  6. Manage the annual USDA commodity purchase program. • Annually forecast and determine USDA commodity purchases. • Place all USDA commodity orders using WBSCM for direct delivery and further processing, fully utilizing available entitlement money. • Ensure USDA commodity orders support the Nutrition Department menus. • Maintain an accurate record of all USDA commodity food balances processed and direct delivery. • Work with the menu planner to utilize all USDA commodity food balances so that by the end of the school year all USDA commodity food balances are depleted.

  7. Participate with the Director and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in the development and preparation of the annual preliminary FNS budget. Review and analyze budgetary and financial data in conjunction with the Director and CFO. • Assist in ensuring that expenditures occur only when compliant with statutes, regulations, and policies, and within the established limitations to achieve budgetary balance. • Assure purchasing activities comply with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.

  8. Assist the Director in determining employee assignments.

  9. Assist in employee interviews and making recommendations of candidates for hire.

  10. Develop and facilitate in-service training for department personnel in conformance with the annual professional development plan.

  11. For assigned subordinate staff, implement appropriate measures to conduct performance evaluations and take disciplinary actions when required. For other employees, issue corrective counseling, including both oral and written warnings as necessary.

  12. Conduct periodic site visits to observe school cafeteria operations and evaluate food services personnel and procedures, develop and recommend improved methods of food preparation and/or service.

  13. Maintain an accurate record of all compensatory time earned and taken by Food & Nutrition Department supervisors. All earned compensatory time must be pre-approved by the director.
