Bellingham Technical College is establishing a pool of qualified candidates to work as Food Service Workers/Baristas and Cooks in the BTC Common Grounds Coffee Shop located on campus. Assignment begins Winter quarter 2026. These are temporary, hourly assignments. Hours are not guaranteed and assignments are based on the needs of the department. Reports to the Facilities Manager.
Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday

- Perform routine barista work including cashiering, preparing/serving food and beverages;
- Perform routine cook work preparing and cooking vegetables, fruits, meats, soups, sauces; prepare salads, desserts, and beverages;
- Operate cooking and kitchen equipment;
- Perform clean-up activities;
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Possession of, or eligible for, a Food Hander's permit (In Whatcom County, the Health Department offers the training & test online at www.foodworkercard.wa.gov. It takes about an hour and cost is $10);
- Cashier experience;
- Barista training a plus;
- Provide excellent customer service;
- Experience preferred but not required.
Physical Work Environment:
Physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation to include but not be limited to working in an environment that requires operating equipment/machinery where reaching high and stooping low, bending and twisting, and manual dexterity are necessary functions. Requires the ability to lift and carry on a regular basis: tables, chairs, and other items weighing as much as fifty pounds. Requires being mobile on your feet 100% of the assigned shift; working with strong cleaning agents and hot water are also required.
Supplemental Information
Compensation: Effective July 1, 2025, the hourly rate is generally in the range of $19.45 to 22.52 per hour.
Benefits include paid sick leave earned in accordance with Washington State law. Sick leave is accrued each month at 1 hour for every 40 hours worked. Employee Assistance Program (EAP), a free counseling & referral program. Potential flexible schedule; No additional benefits.
Condition of Employment:
Finalist(s) in position handling cash will be subject to a pre-employment background check and employment is contingent on passing a criminal history background check satisfactory to the college.
