Job Description

The City of Appleton is currently accepting applications for a vacancy in Public Works. This is manual labor responsible for minor maintenance and cleaning of City vehicles/equipment in the Central Equipment Agency Division and maintenance of equipment/parking ramps of the Department of Public Works. Work involves inspecting and performing minor vehicle/equipment maintenance, custodial functions for Parking, and miscellaneous duties in emergency situations. Work is performed under regular supervision of the C.E.A. Fleet Manager and the Parking Utility Manager. Employee must be able to effectively deal with the public.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

CENTRAL EQUIPMENT AGENCY DUTIES:

  • Performs cleaning duties on city vehicles & equipment.
  • Performs cleaning duties in the Central Equipment Agency maintenance shop.
  • Inspects vehicles and performs minor maintenance, including oil changes, lube work, etc.
  • Performs necessary snow and ice control, including filling of the trucks with material.
  • Maintains building security.
  • Makes occasional part runs.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties on an emergency type basis such as barricading flooded streets, patching holes in roadway, collecting forgotten refuse, etc.
  • May assist mechanics as required.
  • Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works overtime and extra hours as required.

PARKING DUTIES:

  • Inspects parking meters to ensure they are operating properly. Replaces batteries and repairs jammed meters on the street and removes others to parking meter shop for repairs; replaces meter posts.
  • Operates a power sweeper to clean parking ramp floors and a pressure washer to clean the ramp deck to install concrete sealer.
  • Cleans ramps on a daily basis.
  • Installs signage in parking ramps and lots.
  • Removes ice and snow from ramp entrances. Spreads snow melt and ice melt when necessary when needed.
  • Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works overtime and extra hours as required.

Other Job Functions

  • Assists with repairs of parking equipment and bathroom facilities as needed.
  • Replaces light bulbs in parking ramps.
  • Opens parking ramps when needed.
  • Assists in applying concrete sealer on decks of the parking ramps.

Typical Qualifications

Requires some experience of a mechanical nature and some training beyond the high school level or an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Knowledge of equipment mechanics, parts, tools and methods of repair.
  • Ability to drive a truck and other heavy equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to make minor decisions and follow through to corrective action.
  • Ability to properly barricade work sites in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards.
  • Required to respond for emergency operations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment and make necessary repairs.
  • Ability to operate a snowblower, power washer and sweeper.
  • Ability to operate alone on routine work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public, and to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Ability to withstand a variety of temperatures and adverse weather conditions.
