Position Description ENTRY SALARY: $65,226.82

Under limited direction, the Fleet Mechanic Supervisor supervises, monitors, and performs skilled mechanical, and diagnostics work on the fleet vehicles used in the Citys operations. Supervises all repairs and maintenance, controls inventory, sets priorities, and assists in the management of the Division.

Duties and Responsibilities Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Supervises, oversees, and monitors all fleet maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and assessment for the department; ensures quality control on all services rendered, prioritizes and assigns workload, evaluates performance, and oversees mechanical operation.
  • Oversees the check in and processing of equipment to ensure all specifications and requirements are met, pertinent information received, and proper service delivered; checks and reports mileage and vehicle numbers.
  • Maintains, repairs, services, and reconditions varied equipment, tools, and vehicles; performs work on automobiles, trucks, fire apparatus and equipment, stationary and portable generators, garbage packers, pumps, tractors, graders, scooters, mowers, edgers, and similar apparatus; supervises crews and staff handling various equipment.
  • Prepares and drafts work orders for vehicles and equipment; inspects various equipment and vehicles to determine repairs uses diagnostic skills to find specific problem; tests repairs to ensure quality control.
  • Leads, supervises, and evaluates mechanics and crews performing work on vehicles; determines scheduling, delegates work according to maintenance schedules, provides performance and work-related feedback, and assists mechanics with challenging mechanical problems.
  • Enters, edits, and maintains daily timesheets, closes out work orders, tracks inventory of parts and equipment, places orders for needed materials, and maintains accurate records and data spreadsheets.
  • Meets and engages regularly with various vendors and other supervisors; ensures all fleet repairs are being completed and reported to support service continuity; monitors the intake and delivery of vehicles and equipment once serviced, maintained, or repaired.
  • Participates and facilitates in continuous training to enhance mechanical aptitude and ensure the quality of services rendered; stays abreast of new trends within the industry.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:

  • A valid State drivers license is required.
  • Forklift License is required.
  • Does this position require a Commercial Drivers License? Yes
  • Type: Obtain and maintain a Class B CDL within 6 months of hire date.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma, or G.E.D. Certification AND five (5) years of experience in the servicing, maintenance, and repair of varied automotive equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Supplemental Information Knowledge of:

  • Methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment of automotive and power-driven equipment repair, adjustment, overhaul, and maintenance
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the welding trade
  • Mechanical and diagnostic methods and practices
  • Data entry, inventory tracking, and management of fleet equipment
  • Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records
  • General office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment
  • Equipment maintenance practices and methods

Skill in:

  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions
  • Supervising, leading, directing, and monitoring mechanics and mechanical operations
  • Diagnosing trouble in automotive and related electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic equipment
  • Delivering evaluations, prioritizing work, scheduling work and service, and providing feedback for staff
  • Performing heavy mechanical service and repair work in adverse conditions
  • Adhering to City rules, regulations, and policies
