The Position

LOFD is an all-hazards emergency response organization providing a wide range of services, including emergency medical response, structure and wildland fire response, motor vehicle accident, water rescue operations, hazardous materials response and technical rescues.

Education and Experience Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • At least 18 years of age.

  • Valid State Driver's License.

  • Must hold one of the following current certifications:

  • National Registry EMT (NREMT) or Paramedic (NREMT-P)

  • Oregon EMT or Paramedic Certification

  • EMT Certification from another state that is eligible for reciprocity and recognized by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA);

  • All newly hired EMTs are required to obtain Oregon Paramedic Certification within two (2) years of their hire date.

  • Ability to pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT or equivalent).

  • NFPA Firefighter 1 or equivalent, preferred but not required.

SUMMARY OF BENEFITS AND COMPENSATION

To qualify as a Lateral Firefighter, applicants must have a minimum of three (3) consecutive years of full-time, paid experience in a position with comparable duties and responsibilities. Starting pay will be determined based on years of qualifying service, calculated by dividing total years of service by two (2), with the resulting value used to establish the appropriate pay step, based on your experience.

All Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) Member contributions are paid on your behalf by the City, including the 6% employee pick-up.

Other Non-cash compensation includes medical, dental, vision, $50,000 Life Insurance, and $300 MERP contribution.

Employee Assistant Program (EAP)

The EAP offers 6 confidential counseling and 24-hour crisis help to employees and their families at no cost. Other services include educational resources, legal assistance and financial help.

IAFF Medical Expense Reimbursement Plan (MERP)

The IAFF MERP is an account that reimburses employees (spouses/dependents) for incurred out-of-pocket medical expenses. Medical expenses such as deductibles, copayments and other qualified medical expenses.

  • The City will contribute $300.00 per month into your account as specified with the terms of the IAFF collective bargaining agreement, as authorized by IRS Code 501(c)(9).
  • Employees have a mandatory, pre-taxed, supplement contribution that is outlined by Local IAFF.

Deferred Compensation Plan

The City offers a 457(b) deferred compensation retirement plan. Contribution amounts can be specified as a percentage or dollar amount for pre-tax and/or Roth contributions. Eligibility is at hire and participation in this plan is voluntary.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

Allegiance

Flexible Spending Accounts save you money by reducing the taxes you pay. Your FSA contributions are deducted from each paycheck before federal, FICA and, in most cases, state taxes are calculated. Use your FSA contributions to pay for eligible expenses incurred by you, your spouse, and your dependents.

Holidays

The following holidays are observed throughout the year:

New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Birthday, President's Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and two Personal Holiday.

In some years, employees are also eligible for 4 hours holiday on Christmas Eve and 4 hours holiday on New Years' Eve.

Shift personnel receive four and one-half (4-1/2) twenty-four hour shifts off per year in lieu of paid holidays. These hours have been incorporated in their vacation schedule as noted in the vacation section below.

Vacation

Paid vacation time accrues on a yearly basis and begins the first month after hire date.

Vacation leave may accrue to a maximum of two (2) years accrual at the employee's current rate of accrual.

Sick Leave

Shift Personnel shall accrue sick leave at a monthly rate of twelve (12) hours for each full month worked, or an amount prorated for work less than a full month. Maximum sick leave accumulated for shift employees shall be 2,920 hours.

Day Personnel shall accrue sick leave at the rate of eight (8) hours for each full month worked, or an amount prorated for work less than a full month. Maximum accrual for forty-hour workweek employees shall be 150 days (1,200 hours).
