The Williston Fire Department is seeking dedicated and community-driven Firefighter (AEMT) Trainees to join the 2026 Summer/Fall Academy!
The City of Williston Fire Department invites you to apply to begin your career in Fire and Emergency services. A Firefighter (AEMT) Trainee serves as a member of a crew responding to fire calls, disaster calls, and emergency medical calls. A career in the fire service includes training in control and extinguishment of fires and/or mitigating other disasters, applying necessary emergency medical care to sick or injured persons, and participating in the maintenance of station equipment and quarters.
Interested candidates are invited to attend an Open House on Wednesday, July 1st, 2026 from 5:30PM - 7:00PM at Station 2 (610 58th Street West, Williston, ND, 58801). This event is option but intended to allow interested candidates to test the physical agility equipment, see the stations and ask questions about the recruitment process and/or what it is like to have a career in the industry.
Summary:
The purpose of the Firefighter (AEMT) Trainee position is to prepare incumbents to be specifically trained to respond to emergency situations involving fire suppression, medical emergencies, hazardous materials, or special rescues all while providing the highest level of service to those sick and injured. The incumbent in this position is responsible for performing job duties in an accurate manner in order to protect the life and property of the citizens of the City of Williston and surrounding areas.

Education and Experience:
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Training opportunities available to obtain desired certifications for incumbents who have met the minimum certificate, license, and registration requirements.
Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and standard operating guidelines. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before patients, crews and groups of customers or employees of an organization.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Internal Communications:
Regular contacts within the department and with other departments as needed. Must be able to read and write formal communications with correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
External Communications:
Regular contacts with third parties, outside representatives, community groups, and mutual aid partnerships as needed.
Use of Equipment and/or Computers:
Regular use of technology and equipment for job-related functions will be required including but not limited to computers, phones, printers, operation of various department vehicles including fire and EMS apparatus.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to utilize both internal and external resources to obtain information and data necessary to carry out routine assignments and special projects. Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff. Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment, using a high level of professionalism and critical thinking.
Physical Demands:
The Firefighter (AEMT) Trainee is considered to be a very physically demanding position within the department.
Standing in work areas, walking between work areas, and driving to various locations will be required. There will be a regular expectation to pull, push, reach, walk, stand, sit, crawl, kneel, bend and have the use of hands and fingers, use of both eyes for sight, including ability to distinguish color and distance, hearing, extensive use of arms and legs to climb on top of, under, in and around equipment and facilities; work in proximity and use of computer screens; verbally communicating, and moving objects. The employee must be able to physically move, lift, carry and manipulate up to 100 pounds.

Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in and outside of various locations within the community. The noise level in the work environment is loud. Essential functions require maintaining condition necessary for sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time. Employee will work at all Williston Fire Department facilities and is expected to keep work areas clean, safe, and functional.
Work schedule during the fire academy is generally Monday - Friday from 8:00AM-5:00PM or as based on organizational need. Upon completion of the fire academy the working schedule for a Firefighter (AEMT) is 48 hours on/96 hours off. Regular, predictable, and dependable attendance is required. Employee may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.
