Job Description
THE HIRING PROCESS FOR THIS POSITION WILL CONSIST OF A WRITTEN EXAM, ASSESSMENT CENTER AND ORAL INTERVIEW. THESE 3 STEPS WILL BE CONDUCTED IN ONE DAY THE WEEK OF JULY 6, 2026.

CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION
CLASSIFICATION TITLE: TRAINING CAPTAIN
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to supervise departmental training in the absence of the Division Chief of Training. Supervise interns, co-ops, and students of the fire science pathway. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting the Division Chief of Training in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, evaluating all activities and programs of the department to provide continuous fire safety (including suppression and training) for the City, and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by college level course work or vocational training in fire science or fire management preferred; supplemented by one (1) year of experience as a Fire Captain required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must be a Kentucky Certified Career Firefighter. Must be a FF 1&2. Must be a Kentucky certified Emergency Medical Technician. Must be a KY Fire Instructor 2, Fire Officer 1, NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 & 800. KY Fire Instructor 2, Fire Officer 1, ICS-300, and ICS-400 shall be obtained within 18 months of promotion/hire. Must possess all credentials to meet minimum qualifications for Kentucky Department of Education Adjunct of Provisional Instructor Status.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may include ability to compute discount, interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion; may include ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in critical and/or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (100 pounds or over).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, explosives, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
