Description

Chatham County Fire Department is seeking a skilled and dedicated Fire-Medic (Apparatus Operator / Paramedic) to join our team. Under the direction of a Fire Officer, the Fire-Medic is responsible for safely operating fire department apparatus and providing advanced life support (ALS) emergency medical care. This critical position requires expertise in driving and operating emergency vehicles, maintaining equipment readiness, and coordinating activities at an assigned station. As a Fire-Medic, you will play a key role in fire prevention and outreach, fire suppression, emergency medical care, and other department operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate with team members to foster a positive and functional culture, including participation in drills and exercises.
  • Safely operate fire department apparatus during emergency responses and daily activities.
  • Perform daily checks and maintenance on apparatus and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Plan and coordinate station activities such as inventory management, training, apparatus readiness, hydrant inspections, and more.
  • Mentor and supervise assigned personnel, ensuring accountability, professional development, and compliance with department policies.
  • Conduct public fire and life safety education programs and community engagement.
  • Respond to alarms as an apparatus operator, perform firefighting duties, and provide advanced emergency medical care.
  • Address public complaints or requests for information and perform additional duties as directed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of fire protection systems, water supply, building construction, fire operations, and emergency medical care.
  • Skilled in report writing, use of computers, and operation of communication devices.
  • Proficient in driving and operating firefighting apparatus and using firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and follow departmental protocols in both emergency and non-emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • U.S. Citizen.
  • Successfully pass pre-employment testing, physical agility, fitness assessments (NFPA 1582), background checks, and drug screening.
  • Meet certification and licensing requirements for the position.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in another recognized fire department, including 1 year as a pumper driver/operator and Paramedic.

Completion of recruit fire academy and required certifications:

  • Georgia Class F driver's license or equivalent; must obtain Georgia Class F driver's license within 30 days of fire.
  • Must obtain Georgia Certified Firefighter within 30 days of hire.
  • NPQ or IFSAC Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations.
  • NPQ or IFSAC Firefighter 1 and 2.
  • NPQ or IFSAC Apparatus Operator Pumper.
  • National Registry EMT-P; must obtain Georgia Licensed EMT-P within 30 days of hire.
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • NPQ or IFSAC Fire Instructor 1.
  • NPQ or IFSAC Fire Officer 1.
  • Associate degree in emergency services or related field.

Supplemental Information

This is a safety sensitive position and subject to random drug testing.

During emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, you may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team.

In accordance with the Department of Transportation, Commercial Drivers License (CDL) holders and those employed in safety-sensitive positions are subject to random drug testing.

Candidates with direct and relevant experience may receive an offer of up to 10% above the minimum salary that is posted, reflecting their exceptional qualifications.

CHATHAM COUNTY BENEFITS PLANS

Eligibility for benefits begins on your date of hire.

Full-time employees working a regular schedule of 30 or more hours per week are eligible for County benefits. Part-time, seasonal, and temporary employees are not eligible to participate in the County benefit plan. However, regular part-time employees accrue prorated vacation and sick leave based on their schedule.

HEALTH - Employees have a choice between a high or low option point-of-service health plan for themselves, their spouse, and eligible dependent children.

VISION - The vision plan offers a comprehensive eye exam and options for frames, lenses, and contact lenses.

DENTAL - Employees may choose either the high or low dental plan option with two cleanings per year and periodic x-rays at no cost.

EMPLOYEE HEALTH CENTER - Employees and their spouses on the County's health plan have access to the Employee Health Center for physical and behavioral health services, health coaching, and lab services at no cost.

RETIREMENT - Chatham County provides a Defined Benefit Pension Plan with a five-year vesting period.

LIFE & DISABILITY - Long Term Disability and basic Life Insurance coverage are provided at no cost to employees. Employees may also purchase additional life coverage for themselves and their dependent family members.

FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS - Chatham County offers Medical and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts through payroll deduction. The Medical FSA has a rollover feature equal to the annual Federal maximum.
