Are you a highly technical Fire Alarm Designer ready to take ownership of complex life safety systems in one of the fastest-growing construction markets in Texas? TradeSTAR is partnering with a leading life safety contractor in the Austin area to bring on an experienced designer who understands fire alarm systems from concept through commissioning.
This is your opportunity to work on large-scale commercial projects across healthcare, tech campuses, and institutional builds where precision, code compliance, and system performance matter.
About the Opportunity / What You ll Do
Design complete fire alarm and life safety systems in compliance with NFPA 72, NEC, and local AHJ requirements
Produce detailed shop drawings, riser diagrams, and as-built documentation
Perform device layout and spacing calculations (smoke, heat, beam, aspirating detectors) based on occupancy and ceiling conditions
Develop battery calculations, voltage drop calculations, and circuit integrity plans
Engineer notification appliance circuits (NACs) and signaling line circuits (SLCs)
Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, and architectural plans using AutoCAD and/or Revit
Support pre-construction with takeoffs, BOMs, and design-build input
Conduct site surveys and system assessments for retrofit and new construction
Interface with project managers, field technicians, and AHJs during design and approval phases
Ensure designs meet UL listing requirements and manufacturer specifications (Notifier, Simplex, Siemens, etc.)
Qualifications / Who You Are
5+ years of experience in fire alarm system design within commercial construction
Strong working knowledge of NFPA 72, NEC Article 760, and local Texas fire codes
Experience designing conventional, addressable, and voice evacuation systems
Proficient in AutoCAD (required); Revit/ BIM experience is a strong plus
Ability to perform voltage drop, load, and standby battery calculations
Familiar with system integration (fire alarm with access control, HVAC shutdown, elevator recall)
Experience preparing submittal packages and navigating AHJ approval processes
NICET Certification (Level II IV) in Fire Alarm Systems preferred
Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
