Basic Functions

Must be at least 18 years old.  This is a skilled position assisting in the maintenance of District owned utilities, irrigation, facilities and vehicles.

Nature of Work

Perform routine maintenance work on District roads, water systems, or other District facilities and buildings as may be directed by the Manager or Foreman. The work may also include brush and garbage pick-up.

Examples of Work

Road repair, water line repairs, lawn mowing and trimming, equipment maintenance, fabricating and repair broken parts, ditch repairs, minor building repairs operating machinery and mechanical equipment, complete preventive maintenance requirements on gas and diesel engines.

Work Schedule

During irrigation season 4/10’s (Friday-Monday) 10 hour 6am-5pm at hourly wage & On-Call after hours 5pm-6am (paid at 20% of hourly wage).  Off irrigation season (Monday-Thursday) 10 hr. workdays 6am-5pm.

Controls Over the Work

Works under the supervisory control and guidance of the Manager and Foreman. Assignments are received in the form of oral instruction or work orders and rough notes. Work is reviewed for quality and timeliness of completed projects.

Essential Duties of Responsibilities

  • Engage in a wide variety of tasks such as assisting in the maintenance and repair of water services; cleaning ditches, culverts and catch basins; repairing valves and turnouts; repairing pipelines and pumps; ground maintenance including lawn mowing, weed eating, brush and garbage pickup.
  • Perform other duties as required by designated supervisors.
  • Mandatory overtime may be required on a regular basis.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Knowledge of materials and tools that are commonly used in construction, maintenance and repair.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to work being done. Good knowledge of the utilization and care of materials and equipment used.
  • Experience with use of Backhoe and Dump Truck and foresight in running dangerous equipment safely.
  • Knowledge of Tig, Mig and Arc welding experience with Acetylene gas.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical problems.
  • Ability to read and have technical understanding of blueprints.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to lift, push and pull up to 60 lbs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to pass random drug screens.

Physical Demands and Work Environment 

Work is performed primarily out-of-doors involving moderate risks, discomfort, or unpleasantness such as a high level of noise; dust, grease and mud; moving vehicles and machines; cold and/or hot weather. Normal safety precautions are required; and the employee may wear some protective clothing and equipment such as rain and snow gear, boots, goggles, and gloves. Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven surfaces; and recurring bending, crouching, stooping and reaching; and occasional lifting of moderately heavy items. Work requires above average physical agility and dexterity.

Qualifications Required

  • Possession and proof of Valid Washington state driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Physical examination (upon districts request)
  • Dam Tenders Training (Upon districts request)
  • CPR/First Aid Training (Yearly Basis upon districts request)
  • Flagger’s Card (Yearly Basis upon districts request)

Qualifications Desired

  • Class A CDL with Air Brakes
