Job Description

The Field Service Technician travels extensively across the United States to install, commission, service, and repair robotic and industrial automation systems. This role focuses on troubleshooting and optimizing Rockwell PLC and FANUC-controlled equipment, including robotic palletizers and case packing machinery. The technician reads, interprets, and modifies existing code to resolve issues and enhance system performance, while providing on-site support to manufacturing customers. The position requires heavy weekday travel with the assurance of being home every weekend.

Responsibilities

• Travel approximately 80% or more of the time across the U.S. to support customers with on-site service and repair of automation equipment.
• Install new robotic and industrial automation systems, including robotic palletizers and case packing equipment.
• Perform small commissioning efforts for newly installed systems to ensure proper operation and integration.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with Rockwell PLCs and FANUC robots, controls, and programming.
• Read, understand, and interpret existing PLC and HMI code to identify root causes of system issues.
• Make edits, changes, and touch-ups to PLC and HMI programs to correct faults and improve performance.
• Troubleshoot and repair robotic and industrial automated equipment, including electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic components.
• Perform preventive maintenance on automation systems to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
• Troubleshoot electrical circuits, including variable frequency drives (VFDs) and servo motors.
• Support automation systems and controls programming to ensure reliable and efficient operation.
• Collaborate with customer personnel on-site to explain findings, recommend solutions, and provide technical guidance.
• Document service activities, repairs, and programming changes in a clear and organized manner.
• Utilize company-provided resources for travel logistics, including flights, rental cars, and lodging, while adhering to travel and expense guidelines.
• Maintain a professional presence at customer facilities and represent the company's commitment to quality service.
• Ensure safe work practices when working on high-voltage, mechanical, and robotic systems.

Essential Skills

• Associate's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a closely related field.
• 5+ years of field service experience supporting industrial or automation equipment.
• 5+ years of experience troubleshooting and repairing robotic and industrial automated equipment.
• 5+ years of experience making edits to PLC programs and HMI interfaces.
• 5+ years of experience troubleshooting electrical circuits, including VFDs and servo motors.
• 5+ years of experience with FANUC troubleshooting and working with FANUC-based systems.
• Strong hands-on experience with Rockwell PLCs and PLC troubleshooting.
• Proficiency in controls programming and working with automation systems.
• Demonstrated ability to read, understand, and modify ladder logic and other PLC programming languages.
• Solid understanding of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems as they relate to industrial automation.
• Field service mindset with the ability to travel heavily during the week and reliably return home on weekends.
• Strong troubleshooting skills for robotics, controls, and industrial equipment in a production environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Knowledge of FactoryTalk software is a plus.
• Experience with ladder logic programming is preferred.
• Experience in robotics and automation systems, including robotic case packing and palletizing solutions.
• Familiarity with FANUC controls, FANUC robots, and FANUC programming.
• Experience working with automation systems for material handling, vision inspection, and packaging lines.
• Ability to work independently in the field and manage multiple service assignments.
• Strong communication skills to interact effectively with customer teams and internal stakeholders.
• Attention to detail when documenting service work and programming changes.
• Comfort with frequent travel and adapting to different customer sites and production environments.

Work Environment

This role operates within a robotics and automation-focused environment that designs and builds custom automated packaging, material handling, and vision-guided robotic systems. The technician primarily supports manufacturers seeking to increase throughput, reduce labor dependence, improve consistency, and optimize production lines. Typical systems include robotic case packing, palletizing systems, vision inspection and verification systems, direct food-handling automation, autonomous vehicle and material movement solutions, and fully integrated packaging lines and end-of-line automation systems. The position involves heavy weekday travel anywhere within the United States, with the expectation of being home every weekend. Travel logistics, including lodging, flights, rental cars, and fuel, are supported through a company credit card. A daily meal per diem is provided based on IRS guidelines, with a flat incidental rate for full travel days and a partial rate for the first and last day of travel. Work is performed on customer production floors and industrial facilities, requiring comfort around large automated machinery, robotics, and controls equipment, and adherence to all site-specific safety and attire requirements.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Monroe, WI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $52.00/hr.
