Job Title: Field Service Technician (Remote, Third Shift)

Job Description

This fully remote Field Service Technician role focuses on real-time troubleshooting, monitoring, and support of industrial automation systems used in high-volume distribution centers and healthcare fulfillment environments. You will work primarily on third shift, providing remote technical support for automation equipment, ensuring 24/7 operational uptime, and collaborating closely with on-site teams. The position offers paid third-shift availability, minimal travel, strong advancement opportunities, and the ability to work from any location with reliable internet.

Responsibilities

  • Provide real-time remote technical support for automation systems, including print-and-apply, conveyor, and bagging equipment.
  • Monitor system performance during third shift and respond promptly to alerts, alarms, and customer-reported issues.
  • Troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, sensors, motors, and other industrial control system components using remote diagnostic tools.
  • Guide on-site personnel through mechanical and electrical adjustments to resolve issues and verify successful resolution.
  • Document all support interactions, root causes, and corrective actions thoroughly in the ticketing or support system.
  • Escalate unresolved, complex, or critical issues to engineering or field service teams in a timely manner.
  • Participate in knowledge sharing by contributing to support documentation, troubleshooting guides, and training materials.
  • Identify recurring issues, analyze patterns, and recommend long-term solutions to support continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with field technicians during daytime hours during the initial training period to learn systems and procedures.
  • Maintain availability during third-shift hours to answer phone calls, respond to emails, and support customers even when call volume is low.
  • Support new system builds and commissioning activities as needed by providing remote guidance and troubleshooting.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers and internal teams to set expectations and ensure customer satisfaction.

Essential Skills

  • Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Two or more years of experience supporting industrial automation systems, preferably in packaging or material handling environments.
  • Strong understanding of PLC logic and industrial control systems, including platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar.
  • Proven troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical, and control system issues in an industrial environment.
  • Ability to work independently under pressure and make sound decisions in time-sensitive situations.
  • Strong communication skills to clearly guide remote teams, explain technical concepts, and document issues and resolutions.
  • Comfort working overnight hours and participating in an on-call rotation if required.
  • Experience with troubleshooting HMIs, sensors, motors, and other control system components.
  • Ability to provide structured, step-by-step guidance to on-site personnel performing mechanical or electrical adjustments.
  • Reliable high-speed internet connection suitable for remote support and remote diagnostic tools.
  • Quiet, dedicated workspace suitable for third-shift remote work and customer-facing communication.
  • Readiness to travel occasionally (less than 10%) for training or on-site support when needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with tension-based automation systems, servo motors, and print-and-apply technologies.
  • Experience supporting packaging or material handling equipment in high-volume distribution or fulfillment environments.
  • Background in supporting bagging equipment, conveyors, and related automation systems.
  • Experience using ticketing systems or service management tools to log and track support cases.
  • Interest in career growth into lead or advanced technical roles, with a focus on mentoring and knowledge sharing.
  • Comfort working with geographically distributed teams across multiple time zones.
  • Ability to adapt to changing schedules and support requirements as customer needs evolve.

Work Environment

This is a fully remote position where your physical location and time zone are flexible, as long as you can reliably support third-shift operations. The core schedule is third shift, Monday through Friday, with an expected start time around late evening Mountain Time, which may fluctuate based on customer locations and field technician schedules. During the first few months, you will typically work daytime hours (approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) to train with field technicians and become familiar with the equipment and systems before transitioning to night shift. Training is primarily virtual (around 80%), with a required trip to Colorado to see the machines and gain hands-on exposure. The role involves a high volume of phone and email support, with minimal travel overall; occasional travel (less than 10%) for training or on-site support is paid, including door-to-door travel time and associated expenses such as mileage, flights, and layovers. You will clock in and out like a standard hourly role and receive pay for 40 hours per week regardless of call volume, provided you remain available during scheduled hours. The work environment centers on supporting industrial automation technologies remotely, using diagnostic tools, communication platforms, and ticketing systems from a quiet, dedicated home workspace.
