Field Engineering Tech I (FET I) or (FET II)

Job Summary:

Working independently and collaboratively with others, this position plays an integral role in executing CPI's mission, philosophy, and commitment to providing safe, reliable electricity to our members and exceptional service to our internal and external customers. All employees are expected to maintain a high level of trust, integrity and ethical standards.

This is a bargaining unit position (IBEW Local #659). The Field Engineering Tech I inspects electrical facilities to review compliance with relevant standards and codes and works with members, contractors and licensees to ensure the compliance and safety of CPI's electrical facilities and assists with the design and staking of new and revised electrical services and facilities.

This is a bargaining unit position (IBEW Local #659). The Field Engineering Tech II designs and stakes new and revised electrical services for members, designs and stakes revisions and replacements of electrical facilities as part of CPI's ongoing system maintenance, and inspects electrical facilities to ensure compliance with relevant standards and codes.

FET I--Essential Functions of the Position

The essential functions of this position require prioritizing and completing all assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner, adjusting for changing priorities and availability of resources, and demonstrating initiative in identifying additional job-related tasks to be completed when time permits.

1. Inspect overhead, underground and member facilities as necessary to ensure compliance with NESC, joint use agreements, and CPI maintenance and construction standards.
2. Make and maintain contact with members, licensees and property owners in the field and in the office as necessary to develop solutions that meet cooperative needs while providing exceptional customer service and support.
3. Visit work sites to inspect trenches and ensure completion of work necessary for construction of electrical facilities.
4. Work with relevant parties to ensure necessary permit and easement acquisition.
5. Assist with the design and staking of system improvements, upgrades, modifications, new power line extensions and revisions, and pole replacements.
6. Maintain and improve the accuracy of Graphical Information System (GIS) mapping and facilities records through as-built entry and correction of existing data, using computerized staking, mapping and database applications.
7. Confer with members of the engineering team, line crews and other personnel to resolve line construction challenges and ensure successful and timely completion of projects.
8. Communicate in a professional, respectful and courteous manner with all employees, the Board of Directors, members and others with whom we may work. Contributes to a successful work group through positive interactions, active listening, meaningful collaborations, and the constructive exchange of ideas designed to meet or exceed the organization's strategic goals.
9. Complete special projects and other duties as assigned to meet team, department and organizational goals while actively demonstrating accountability and responsibility for achieving desired outcomes and measurable results.

• Minimum high school diploma or GED and any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Valid driver's license.

1. Design and stake system improvements, upgrades, modifications, new power line extensions and revisions, and pole replacements.
2. Prepare cost estimates for distribution, single and three phase, overhead and underground construction, maintenance and system improvement projects.
3. Inspect overhead, underground and member facilities as necessary to ensure compliance with NESC, joint use agreements, and CPI maintenance and construction standards.
4. Make and maintain contact with members, licensees and property owners in the field and in the office as necessary to develop solutions that meet cooperative needs while providing exceptional customer service and support.
5. Visit work sites to inspect trenches and ensure completion of work necessary for construction of electrical facilities.
6. Work with relevant parties to ensure necessary permit and easement acquisition.
7. Schedule and direct pre-construction meetings with members, contractors, and other staff.
8. Maintain and improve the accuracy of Graphical Information System (GIS) mapping and facilities records through as-built entry and correction of existing data, using computerized staking, mapping and database applications.
9. Complete peer review of design work completed by other FET II(s) and mentor FET 1(s) and trainees when working together on projects.
10. Confer with members of the engineering team, line crews and other personnel to resolve line construction challenges and ensure successful and timely completion of projects.
11. Communicate in a professional, respectful and courteous manner with all employees, the Board of Directors, members and others with whom we may work. Contributes to a successful work group through positive interactions, active listening, meaningful collaborations, and the constructive exchange of ideas designed to meet or exceed the organization's strategic goals.

• Minimum high school diploma or GED and vocational or technical training in surveying, CAD or GIS or related field; or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Minimum four years work experience as Field Field Engineering Technician I including two years' work experience staking line.
• Completion of two year Engineer or Line Staking Program or any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. (Typical education would include an AA degree from an accredited college, university, or equivalent with appropriate technical coursework. Typical experience would include 5 years relevant experience in the electrical utility transmission and distribution field with two years in electric estimating/design, or a related field.)
• Valid driver's license.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills necessary to communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external customers, vendors, contractors, and other diverse audiences while providing outstanding customer service.
• Strong technical, trouble-shooting, problem solving, research, organizational and analytical skills, combined with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet established deadlines. Ability to multitask is also essential while remaining flexible with changing priorities and deadlines.
• Well-reasoned decision making with a high attention to detail regarding organization, planning, work flow, and project prioritization to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and accurately.
• Highly ethical, self-motivated individual with ability to work independently and/or with limited direction, as well as cooperatively in a team environment, while consistently demonstrating collaborative, respectful and productive work habits.
• Basic knowledge of electric theory and practice and of RUS and CPI construction specifications, the National Electric Safety Code, and state and local codes with the ability to calculate pole, pole top assembly, conductor, guy and anchor strengths.
• Strong computer skills and the understanding of basic surveying equipment, including GPS and transit.

• Provide intellectually sound and well-reasoned answers, recommendations and solutions to identified business problems, issues and/or questions. Efficiently and quickly analyze, process, manipulate, and accurately record extensive amounts of data (some of which is technical in nature) and other information that serves as the basis for this position.
• Move to, from and within our building and across utility-related property site locations, possibly during inclement weather.
• Work for extended periods of time in a stationary position operating computer equipment while consistently grasping, moving and manipulating documents, office supplies, and other business materials.
• Use a personal computer or other technology devices frequently and consistently for the purpose of reviewing, analyzing, creating, transmitting, and presenting documents, data and other business-related information.
• Lift, transport and/or move up to approximately 30 lbs. each day in the performance of regular duties. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and descending a stepladder may be required.
• Drive on behalf of CPI and/or report for work in all types of weather.
