Field Engineer

Job Description

This Field Engineer role supports active construction projects by closely partnering with the Sr Superintendent and Project Manager to monitor daily progress, coordinate with subcontractors, and document site activities. The position focuses heavily on field presence, walking the project site, observing work, and translating those observations into clear, accurate reports that help keep interior renovation and multifamily base build projects on schedule and aligned with plans.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Sr Superintendent on project sites to support day-to-day field operations.
  • Spend the majority of the day walking the project site to observe work in progress, verify activities, and identify potential issues.
  • Communicate regularly with subcontractors on site to understand status, clarify expectations, and track progress against plans.
  • Take detailed notes throughout the day on work completed, issues encountered, and any deviations from drawings or schedules.
  • Participate in end-of-day meetings with the Superintendent and Project Manager to review observations, discuss site conditions, and align on next steps.
  • Prepare clear, concise daily reports that summarize site activities, progress, and any concerns or punch list items.
  • Review construction documents, drawings, and blueprints to ensure work aligns with design intent and project specifications.
  • Support punch list creation and completion by identifying deficiencies, documenting them, and following up on corrective actions.
  • Assist with subcontractor management by helping track performance, scope adherence, and schedule impacts.
  • Use Procore or similar construction management software to document site activities, upload photos, and maintain project records.
  • Support interior renovation activities by monitoring work such as flooring, drywall, painting, and other finishes for quality and compliance.
  • Collaborate with the project team to help ensure projects progress safely, efficiently, and in accordance with plans and timelines.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to walk the project site for most of the workday and remain active on foot throughout the shift.
  • Experience reviewing construction documents, including the ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings.
  • Punch list experience, including identifying, documenting, and tracking completion of deficiencies.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with superintendents, project managers, subcontractors, and field staff.
  • Experience using Procore or similar construction management software for documentation and reporting.
  • Subcontractor management experience, including coordinating activities and monitoring progress.
  • Degree in construction-related field or past experience working on construction projects.
  • Understanding of basic interior renovation work, including flooring, drywall, painting, and related trades.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong people skills and the ability to build productive working relationships on site.
  • Detail-oriented approach to note-taking, documentation, and daily reporting.
  • Comfort working on multiple types of projects, including public works, base build multifamily, and corporate interiors.
  • Interest in supporting a growing multifamily base build team within a contractor known for interior renovations.

Work Environment

This is a site-based role that requires working onsite five days a week across active construction projects, including public works, base build multifamily, and corporate interior renovations in the greater Washington, DC area. The position is highly field-focused, with approximately 75% of the time spent walking the job site, observing work, and interacting with subcontractors, and about 25% dedicated to end-of-day meetings and report preparation. You will work closely with superintendents and project managers in a fast-paced construction environment that relies on tools such as Procore for documentation and coordination.
