Job Title: Field Engineer - Industrial Power and Natural Gas Projects

Job Description

This Field Engineer role supports large-scale industrial power and natural gas compression projects through the full Engineering, Procurement, and Construction lifecycle. You will spend the early phases based in the Houston office and then mobilize to project sites across the United States, working closely with project managers, engineers, trades, and subcontractors. The position offers exposure to both engineering and construction, with a strong focus on heavy industrial, mechanical, and instrumentation and electrical scopes, and provides a clear path toward future project management opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Support a large EPC construction project through all Engineering, Procurement, and Construction phases for mega industrial power and natural gas compression facilities.
  • Work on compressor station projects with a strong emphasis on mechanical scopes, including turbines, motors, and engines.
  • Contribute to power generation projects for data centers using multiple turbines or reciprocating engines, often integrated with batteries, BESS, or solar, with a heavy focus on instrumentation and electrical work.
  • Maintain and promote a strong safety culture on site and in the office, consistently reinforcing safe work practices.
  • Assist the project manager in planning and managing smaller projects or defined portions of larger projects.
  • Review and understand contract terms, conditions, and scope to ensure work aligns with contractual requirements.
  • Track materials, production, and project costs and provide accurate reporting for project manager review and approval.
  • Assist in coordinating and facilitating subcontractor activities across disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, civil, and process piping.
  • Help maintain and update the overall project schedule, identifying risks and supporting mitigation efforts.
  • Perform basic estimating, including quantity takeoffs and solicitation of quotes from vendors and subcontractors.
  • Provide onsite administrative support, including documentation, reporting, and coordination with field teams.
  • Assist with quality assurance and quality control activities, including test protocols, inspections, and documentation.
  • Manage document control activities, including tracking, organizing, and maintaining drawings, specifications, contracts, RFIs, and revisions from project inception to completion.
  • Review and mark up drawings with redlines and revisions to reflect field changes and as-built conditions.
  • Oversee and monitor subcontractor performance within assigned disciplines to ensure safety, quality, and schedule adherence.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and prints to guide construction activities and verify field installation.
  • Use project management software to support planning, tracking, reporting, and communication.
  • Collaborate with a team of project engineers, project controls, and the project manager to deliver projects safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Travel to and work at project sites across the United States during the construction phase, typically for extended periods.
  • Participate in a structured training program, gradually taking on more responsibility from material management to full project scope.

Essential Skills

  • At least 3 years of experience as a Field Engineer or in a similar role focused on the constructability of heavy industrial or power plant projects.
  • Hands-on experience with heavy industrial construction, including mechanical, electrical, and power plant scopes.
  • Demonstrated experience in document control, including tracking and organizing project documents such as drawings, specifications, contracts, and RFIs throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Proficiency in managing drawing revisions and redlines to accurately reflect design and field changes.
  • Experience overseeing subcontractors in one or more of the following disciplines: electrical, mechanical (heavily preferred), civil, or process piping.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with project managers, engineers, trades, and subcontractors.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, prints, and specifications.
  • Experience using project management software to support scheduling, tracking, and reporting.
  • Willingness and ability to be away from home on project sites for weeks at a time during the construction phase.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, as project needs require.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • An engineering degree is preferred and may be in mechanical, electrical, industrial, or a related discipline.
  • Background in construction management for industrial facilities, compressor stations, or power plants.
  • Experience with turbines, motors, engines, and related mechanical systems in industrial environments.
  • Exposure to power generation projects supporting data centers, including simple-cycle plants with multiple turbines or reciprocating engines.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation and electrical (I&E) systems, especially in power generation or industrial settings.
  • Experience with MEP and gas turbine projects in an EPC environment.
  • Interest in career progression toward project management roles, typically after 5 or more years of experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in cost tracking and schedule maintenance.
