Family Engagement Liaison/Truancy Officer

DEFINITION

The School Attendance Liaison serves as a key member of the student support team, working collaboratively with students, families, school staff, and community agencies to improve student attendance and engagement. The Attendance Liaison monitors attendance data, identifies barriers to regular school attendance, coordinates interventions, and supports the implementation of a comprehensive attendance improvement system across K12 schools.

The Attendance Liaison promotes a positive school culture by building strong relationships with students and families, connecting them to resources, and ensuring compliance with district attendance policies and state regulations.

Job Title: Family Engagement Liaison/Truancy Officer

Reports To: Director of Student Services, Principal, or Designee

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor daily attendance data and identify students with attendance concerns, including chronic absenteeism and excessive tardiness.
  • Conduct outreach to students and families regarding attendance concerns through phone calls, emails, letters, home visits, and conferences.
  • Develop and implement attendance intervention plans for students experiencing attendance challenges.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance interventions, family contacts, and support services provided.
  • Collaborate with school teams to monitor student attendance progress and adjust interventions as needed.
  • Establish positive relationships with students and families to identify and address barriers to attendance.
  • Facilitate attendance meetings and conferences with families, school personnel, and community partners.
  • Connect families with school and community resources related to transportation, health services, housing, counseling, and other identified needs.
  • Provide information and education to families regarding attendance expectations and the impact of attendance on academic achievement.
  • Collaborate with administrators, counselors, social workers, teachers, nurses, and other support staff to improve student attendance outcomes.
  • Participate in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), student support teams, and attendance review meetings.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of schoolwide attendance initiatives and prevention strategies.
  • Support efforts to improve school climate, student engagement, and family involvement.
  • Ensure adherence to district attendance policies and applicable state attendance laws.
  • Prepare attendance reports and analyze trends to support decision-making and intervention planning.
  • Assist with truancy prevention efforts and required legal processes when appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and family information in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Conduct home visits when appropriate and in accordance with district procedures.
  • Participate in professional development related to attendance, student engagement, and family support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, Psychology, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with school-aged children and families is preferred.
  • Experience in education, attendance services, social work, counseling, case management, or community outreach preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and community agencies is preferred.
