Purpose Of Job

The Kansas City Public Schools Family and Community Outreach Specialist supports the district's outreach and engagement strategy, with a focus on managing external relationships, and planning and implementing key events, projects and programs.

This position serves as a key liaison to families, neighborhood organizations, community groups and the broader Kansas City community to facilitate knowledge and understanding of KCPS programs, initiatives and practices, increasing support for the vision, mission, and strategic goals of the school district. The Family and Community Outreach Specialist will also conduct ongoing outreach to assist KCPS with determining how best to partner with the community and develop a robust culture of collaboration across stakeholder groups.

What You''ll Be Doing: (Responsibilities)

  • Serves as the key planner and project manager for family and community outreach and engagement events, ensuring effective event design, agenda development, content pacing and opportunities for relationship building and networking.
  • Organizes and coordinates community events that further the district's outreach and marketing strategy while identifying opportunities for engaging and communicating with local community, including: church leaders, civic group leaders, government officials, local business owners, institutional leaders, students, parents and volunteers.
  • Acts as a visible representative of KCPS by confidently speaking in public settings, including community meetings, presentations, panels, and forums.
  • Attends community events to show support and involvement of KCPS.
  • Supports schools in the implementation of school-based, family and community engagement practices and programs that impact student achievement.
  • Assists in providing family and community engagement training for staff and external stakeholders.
  • Conducts demographic and community analyses, including interviews and focus groups, to inform outreach, marketing, and engagement strategies.
  • Plans and leads focus groups, discussion circles, field-based experiences, and school visits aligned to KCPS strategic priorities.
  • Assists district leadership in structuring all events with families and communities to elicit full and meaningful parent and community participation.
  • Attends district meetings as needed to share information with the public and supports the development of accessible family resources.
  • Attends and supports the District Advisory Committee meetings as scheduled throughout the year.
  • Responds to community requests for information in a timely, professional manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

To Be Successful at This Job, You''ll Need To: (Qualifications)

  • Bachelor''s Degree in Education, Nonprofit Management, Public Relations or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Three (3) years of experience in family or community outreach or program development.
  • Demonstrated experience in event planning and event management, including agenda setting, facilitation, and creating engaging participant experiences.
  • Experience applying conflict resolution, mediation, and stakeholder engagement strategies.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills with the ability to represent an organization confidently in diverse settings.

  • Five (5) years of experience in community outreach or community program development.
  • Experience working with school building and district level administrators.
  • Ability to speak, write or understand conversational Spanish.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to support strong project management and implementation experience.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft office software programs.
  • Ability to work with many stakeholder groups.
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal, communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and team building skills.
  • Organized and detail oriented with the ability to multi-task, analyze and drive process improvement.

This job requires that the employee be able to: sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands, fingers, reach with hands and fingers; bend, stoop, lift objects of at least twenty-five pounds, and kneel on the floor to perform medical procedures. Must be able to walk a minimum of two flights of stairs. Assist in the lifting of students, in an emergency situation. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Terms of Employment:

Length of work year: 12 months, 5 days per week, 7.5 hours per day
