Tell me more…..

The City of Peoria’s Neighborhood & Human Services Department is seeking an energetic, compassionate and service-driven Adaptive Recreation Coordinator (Family & Youth Services Coordinator) to help lead impactful programs that create meaningful experiences for individuals of all abilities. This is more than a recreation position – it’s an opportunity to build inclusive spaces where participants feel supported, empowered and celebrated every day. Working at the William L. Patena Community Center, this position plays a vital leadership role in the City’s Adaptive Recreation Program, serving individuals with developmental disabilities, physical challenges and hearing and/or visual impairments, along with their families and caregivers.

Programs include afterschool, summer and adult day services offered through the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), as well as dances, workshops, community events and Team Peoria – the City’s award-winning Special Olympics program serving athletes ages 8 and older from Peoria and surrounding communities. From basketball and bowling to swimming, golf and flag football, you’ll help create opportunities for participants to grow socially, emotionally and physically while building confidence, friendships and lifelong memories.

If you are passionate about inclusion, thrive in a fast-paced environment and want to make a genuine difference in the community, we invite you to apply.

Hiring range: $67,005 – $75,046 annually, depending on qualifications.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of adaptive recreation and DES/DDD programs such as Adult Day and Summer Programs, with a strong focus on participant success and safety with nights and weekends required.
  • Ensure compliance with all licensing requirements, contractual obligations and regulatory standards.
  • Conduct operational audits and maintain high-quality program standards.
  • Hire, train, motivate and supervise a large team of both full-time benefitted and part-time seasonal staff.
  • Develop and coordinate engaging programs, classes, sports leagues and special events.
  • Support and grow Team Peoria Special Olympics programming and participant engagement.
  • Create marketing content and contribute to the quarterly program brochure.
  • Build strong relationships with participants, families, caregivers, community partners and outside agencies.
  • Help cultivate an inclusive, welcoming and supportive environment for all participants.

You may be the ideal candidate if you have:

  • A passion for serving individuals of all abilities and creating meaningful community experiences.
  • Experience developing or leading adaptive recreation, therapeutic recreation or special needs programming.
  • Exceptional customer service and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong leadership abilities with experience supervising and mentoring staff teams.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple demands on your time including evening and weekend work.
  • Creativity, initiative and the ability to bring fresh ideas to programs and events.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities successfully.
  • A positive, solutions-focused mindset and commitment to participant-centered programming.
  • Experience working with DES/DDD programs, licensing requirements or Special Olympics programs.
  • Experience in recreational or education settings managing programming offerings for participants.
