General Summary Western Michigan University invites applications for the position of Faculty Specialist I - Lecturer Ethnomusicology & Musicology in the Irving S. Gilmore School of Music in the College of Fine Arts. The position will require in-person instruction on the WMU main campus in Kalamazoo. This is a one-year academic year terminal position. The anticipated start date is fall of 2026.

Major Duties

  • Teach undergraduate music history and ethnomusicology.
  • Teach upper-level and graduate seminars in areas of expertise.
  • Teach general classes in world music for non-majors.
  • Other teaching duties as assigned.
  • Attend departmental faculty and area meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral candidate ABD in Ethnomusicology/Musicology from an accredited institution by time of appointment.
  • 1 year of prior teaching experience in ethnomusicology and music history as the instructor of record.

Desired Qualifications

  • 2 years of full-time teaching experience at the collegiate level.
  • Experience teaching research methods and writing-intensive courses.
  • Experience with online learning platforms and related technology.
  • A vision for how a musicology curriculum should adapt to the changing landscape of musical practices.
