The Animal & Rangeland Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

This position sits within the Animal and Rangeland Sciences Department in OSU's College of Agricultural Sciences.

College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) faculty are committed to enhancing student success by engaging students in quality academic, research, internships, global studies, and other experiential learning opportunities. The position works alongside Research and Extension faculty, conducting water, vegetation, and soils research projects throughout the state of Oregon. This position is responsible for installing and maintaining field monitoring equipment; conducting field data collection and lab analysis of soils, vegetation, and water quality samples; and performing quantitative analyses and writing project reports.

Key Responsibilities

50% Ongoing Research and field work at various locations throughout the state of Oregon.

  • Maintain instrumentation and collect field data, conduct quality assurance and quality control on all data using approved research methods, and perform miscellaneous other duties related to conducting ongoing research.
  • Install or replace, maintain, and collect data from a miscellaneous of sensors and monitoring stations, including weather monitoring stations, shallow groundwater wells, streamflow gauges, and soil monitoring stations.
  • Conduct vegetation, soils, and water analyses.
  • Maintain field, lab, and office equipment.

45% Data analysis, manuscript preparation, and co-authorship

  • Organize, interpret, and synthesize data for archiving and for manuscript preparation.
  • The incumbent will participate in publications derived from the research findings.
  • Present project results at local/regional professional meetings and as a guest lecturer in OSU courses if invited.

5% Other duties as needed/ assigned

What You Will Need

B.S. degree in water sciences, natural sciences, ecology, or other related field with two - years equivalent work experience in hydrology and water quality, conducting field data collection (e.g., streamflow measurements, sensor installation), lab analysis of water quality samples, and data synthesis, statistical analysis, and report preparation; or,

Graduate student level work in water resources science with one year of experience conducting hydrology and water quality field data collection and lab analysis of soils and water samples; installing and maintaining monitoring stations (data loggers, enclosures, sensors, batteries, solar panels, etc.); organizing and synthesizing field and lab data; statistical analysis; and creating and presenting reports.

Experience in programming, installing, and maintaining lab and field scientific instrumentation used in hydrology studies.

Ability to work among a diverse population of researchers, students, faculty, and external partners, and to embrace a variety of ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified, and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

What We Would Like You to Have

MS research experience in water resources science.

Experience in developing coding for data analysis, leading to hydrological modeling approaches.

Experience teaching or assisting in teaching water or rangeland-related coursework.

Experience in research related to water cycling in rangelands and other agroecosystems.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

A significant amount of work will be outdoors in various weather conditions. Lab and office work will be indoors. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. for short distances. Must be able to conduct field work on uneven terrain as part of job duties. Field work schedule will be between Monday - Friday, 6am - 7pm. Mornings and evenings outside 6am - 7pm, or overtime is not expected. Travel from Corvallis to work sites will be done during work hours as part of the job.
