Description of Position
The Associate Professor of Diesel Technology is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in diesel systems and related technical coursework while supporting student success in classroom, lab, and shop environments. The position includes course preparation, hands-on instruction, curriculum development, assessment of student learning, and ongoing alignment of program content with current industry standards and workforce needs. Faculty are expected to maintain a safe, organized, and effective instructional setting that reflects the operational demands of diesel technology, including the use of tools, equipment, and diagnostic systems commonly found in the field. The role also includes participation in program development, collaboration with faculty, staff, and industry partners, and engagement in service to the college community. Assignments may include teaching in multiple formats, such as in-person, hybrid, online, evening, weekend, or dual enrollment settings, and may involve work across campuses or instructional sites. The position works under the general supervision of the Dean of Career and Technical Education and requires independent judgment, strong instructional leadership, and a commitment to continuous professional growth.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach diesel technology courses through classroom, laboratory, and shop-based instruction in areas such as diesel engines, electrical/electronic systems, hydraulics, braking systems, drivetrain components, preventive maintenance, and diagnostic procedures.
- Prepare course materials, lesson plans, learning activities, assessments, and instructional content that align with program outcomes, industry standards, and college requirements.
- Evaluate student performance by assessing knowledge, technical skills, safety practices, participation, and competency attainment, and provide timely feedback to support student success.
- Develop and revise curriculum, course outlines, lab activities, and program materials to ensure diesel technology instruction remains current, relevant, and responsive to workforce and industry needs.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and effective instructional environment by monitoring shop operations, enforcing safety procedures, and ensuring proper use of tools, equipment, and training resources.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, administrators, advisory boards, and industry partners to support program improvement, student placement, recruitment, retention, and overall program growth.
- Participate in college service, including committee work, program meetings, professional development, and other institutional activities that support the mission and goals of the college.
- Support flexible instructional delivery by teaching in varied formats and settings, which may include in-person, hybrid, online, evening, weekend, dual enrollment, and multi-campus assignments.
Minimum Expectations & Requirements
Education:
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience:
- Five (5) years of recent work experience in the field to be taught; OR
- Specialized certificate in the field to be taught may be considered for terminal degree and certificate programs only.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of diesel engines and related systems, including fuel, electrical/electronic, hydraulic, brake, steering, suspension, drivetrain, and preventive maintenance systems
- Skill in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing medium- and heavy-duty diesel vehicles and equipment using current industry tools and diagnostic practices
- Knowledge of shop safety standards, equipment operation, hazard awareness, and safe work practices applicable to diesel technology instruction
- Ability to prepare and deliver effective classroom, laboratory, and hands-on shop instruction for students with varying levels of experience
- Knowledge of current industry standards, trends, and workforce expectations within diesel technology and fleet maintenance
- Skill in assessing student performance, documenting progress, and providing timely instructional feedback
- Ability to develop lesson plans, instructional materials, lab activities, and curriculum aligned with course and program outcomes
- Skill in using computers and instructional technology, including learning management systems, email, presentation software, and basic office applications
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, colleagues, administrators, and industry partners
- Ability to organize work, manage instructional lab environments, maintain equipment accountability, and support a clean, safe, and productive learning setting
Preferred Skills & Abilities
Education:
- Associates degree in the discipline to be taught; OR Bachelors degree in the discipline to be taught
Professional Experience:
- Community college teaching experience
- Experience with multimedia technology to enhance student learning
- Experience with online instruction
- Experience working with culturally diverse populations
- Ability to teach other courses.
