What You Will Do

The Utilities and Infrastructure organization is seeking a motivated and early career Facility & Utility Support Operator to provide around-the-clock surveillance, monitoring, and operational support for assigned facilities, utility systems, and infrastructure. This role is focused on maintaining continuous awareness of facility and utility conditions, identifying abnormal or changing conditions, and ensuring timely communication and response.

The selected candidate will monitor and assess facility and utility system status, conduct routine rounds and walk-downs, document observations, and communicate issues to appropriate organizations. This position requires strong situational awareness, attention to detail, procedural compliance, and the ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.

The successful candidate will:
  • Provide 24/7 surveillance and monitoring of assigned facilities, utilities, and infrastructure systems.
  • Conduct routine facility rounds, system checks, walk-downs, and field observations.
  • Identify, document, and report abnormal conditions, equipment issues, safety concerns, utility interruptions, or changing facility conditions.
  • Monitor facility and utility alarms, status indications, logs, operating parameters, and electronic systems.
  • Support timely communication and notification to maintenance, operations, engineering, safety, security, emergency response, and other support organizations.
  • Follow approved procedures, operating instructions, checklists, and work control requirements.
  • Maintain logs, turnover notes, shift records, electronic entries, and other required documentation.
  • Support shift turnover by communicating facility status, outstanding issues, ongoing work, and areas requiring follow-up.
  • Respond to facility and utility-related conditions, alarms, and emergent issues in accordance with established procedures.
  • Work with subject matter experts and support organizations to communicate observed conditions and assist with issue resolution.
  • Maintain a safe and secure work environment by recognizing hazards, following procedures, and escalating concerns appropriately.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Facility & Utility Surveillance: Demonstrated ability to perform facility rounds, walkdowns, system checks, monitoring, or field observations in an operational, industrial, maintenance, utilities, or facility environment. Ability to recognize abnormal conditions and communicate those appropriately.

Facility Operations & Infrastructure Awareness: Working knowledge of facility operations, utility systems, building systems, or infrastructure support functions. Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, water, gas, steam, compressed air, wastewater, or related systems is desirable.

Monitoring and Documentation: Experience maintaining logs, completing checklists, documenting field observations, recording equipment status, or using electronic systems to track operational information. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.

Communication & Teamwork: Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate facility conditions, abnormal events, equipment concerns, and operational status clearly to maintenance, operations, engineering, safety, security, and customer organizations.

Problem Recognition & Response: Ability to identify changing or abnormal conditions, evaluate the urgency of issues, follow response procedures, and notify the appropriate personnel or organizations. Ability to remain calm and focused during emergent or off-normal conditions.

Technology: Working knowledge of basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office. Ability to learn and use Laboratory systems for electronic log keeping, alarm monitoring, work management, shift turnover, facility status tracking, or related operational functions.

Shift Work:
Ability and willingness to work a rotating 24/7 shift schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and call-ins as required.

Education/Experience: Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting facility rounds, operational surveillance, field inspections, or system monitoring.
  • Experience with utility systems such as water, gas, steam, electrical distribution, chilled water, wastewater, or roadway infrastructure.
  • Experience using building automation systems, alarm monitoring systems, computerized maintenance management systems, or similar tools.
  • Experience in responding to alarms, equipment issues, outages, abnormal events, or emergent facility conditions.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: This position supports 24/7 facility and utility surveillance and requires rotating shift work, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and possible call-ins.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
