Salary

  • Support Salary Scale Grade S06: $21.23 per hour; starting

Under the Fair Labor and Standards Act this position is non-exempt from overtime. Actual salary placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Frederick County Public School System.Please see linked salary scale for the full range.

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position ensures the cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness of school facilities, supporting a positive and productive learning environment for students and staff. The focus is on performing and overseeing custodial tasks, maintaining grounds, and addressing facility needs through daily, periodic, and seasonal work.

A key responsibility is assisting the Facilities Services, Lead with scheduling, supply management, and quality control to ensure custodial operations are efficient and meet high standards. The role also emphasizes safety compliance by maintaining clean and hazard-free work areas and ensuring all tasks adhere to OSHA and district policies.

This position fosters collaboration and teamwork by supporting other personnel and providing exceptional customer service to school staff and the community. It also contributes to the department's strategic goals by maintaining well-functioning facilities that enhance the educational experience and reflect the district's commitment to operational excellence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performing daily, periodic, and seasonal custodial tasks such as emptying trash, mopping floors, sanitizing restrooms, high and low dusting, cleaning windows, and refinishing floors.
  • Seasonal tasks include snow removal, salt spreading, grass mowing, and mulching.
  • Responsible for graffiti removal, replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles, unclogging plumbing fixtures, and performing minor equipment repairs.
  • Assist the Lead Custodian with scheduling custodial activities to support operations, extracurricular events, and emergencies while minimizing overtime costs.
  • Ensuring custodians are maintaining their assigned areas.
  • Monitoring custodial supply levels, and completing required documentation such as inventory reports, work orders, and 1PM updates.
  • Maintains work areas in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition, adhering to OSHA and district standards.
  • Monitors work activities to prevent injuries and ensure site safety.
  • Operates and maintains tools and equipment, such as tractors, snow blowers, and lawn mowers, in safe working condition.
  • Reports unsafe conditions or broken equipment immediately and ensures all tasks are performed safely.
  • Conducts regular inspections of custodial work and facility conditions to ensure cleanliness and operational readiness.
  • Reports findings to the appropriate personnel and provides feedback or additional training to custodial staff as needed.
  • Fosters teamwork, professionalism, and collaboration across the organization.
  • Attends training sessions and meetings to upgrade skills and knowledge.
  • Adapts to reassignment between shifts when needed and responds promptly to facility emergencies, including after-hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Provides exceptional customer service and supports other personnel as needed to complete tasks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training/Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two years of paid, professional experience in the custodial field, or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved

Certification/License:

  • None

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training/Experience:

  • Paid, professional custodial experience related to a public entity preferably an agency related to public education
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • Valid driver's license
  • Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals, and programs

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • The work environment requirements of this position include: exposure to inclement weather, exposure to dust/fumes, exposure to hazardous equipment, work around moving mechanical parts, work on and off moving equipment, exposure to bodily fluid, work on slippery surfaces, and exposure to high noise levels.
