Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a major research university in the University of North Carolina System with student enrollment exceeding 29,000 students. The Department of Exercise and Sport Science (exss.unc.edu) supports an undergraduate program of over 1,400 undergraduate majors with three specialization areas (Exercise and Sport Science, Fitness Professional, Sport Administration); a Master of Arts graduate program enrolling ~60 students also with three specializations (Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology, Sport Administration); and a doctoral program in Human Movement Science in partnership with the UNC-CH School of Medicine (hmsc.unc.edu). The mission of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) is to discover, create and promote knowledge of human movement to improve the quality of life of individuals and society. The mission of EXSS is further enhanced through interdisciplinary cooperation and departmental faculty securing competitive extramural funding in the form of contracts and grants. These endeavors enable the department to advance knowledge and thus serve the state and nation.

The teaching, research, and service efforts of the EXSS Department are supported by an outstanding faculty and staff, which currently includes: 43 full-time faculty, 8 part-time (fixed term) faculty, 20 joint appointment / adjunct faculty, 8 emeritus faculty, 36 full-time EXSS staff members, and 16 full-time Campus Recreation staff members.

Position Summary

This position is a member of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) Facility/Utility Crew which supports the maintenance, minor facilities and equipment repairs, grounds work, field maintenance, carpentry projects, minor renovations, and equipment set ups for LFIT classes and departmental events. EXSS facilities are varied and complex and include Woollen Gymnasium (143,251 sq. ft.), Fetzer Hall (160,598 sq. ft.), the UNC Outdoor Education Center complex (39.59 acres), Stallings-Evans Sports Medicine Center, Kessing Outdoor Pool, Bowman Gray Indoor Pool, the Rams Head Recreation Center and the Student Recreation Center.

The majority of this positions responsibilities and duties are at the Outdoor Education Center (OEC). The OEC complex is located off of Country Club Road on 39+ acres of land and supports academic classes, a faculty research program, the Outdoor Challenge Course Program, the Outdoor Expedition Program, campus recreation programs for employees and students, and provides services and programs to the community. The OEC property is not supported by UNC Facilities and 15-20 acres of the property (facilities and grounds) are maintained by this position and one other Facility Maintenance/Building Trades Technician on the EXSS Facility/Utility Crew. The propertys main building houses the Get Real and Heel Breast Cancer Program. Other buildings on the OEC property provide staff offices, equipment storage, a carpentry shop; a workshop, and a stone bathhouse. Outdoor facilities include a covered pavilion, 8 tennis courts, 3 sand volleyball courts, an 18-hole disc golf course, and a retention pond.

This position serves as Lead Worker for one Facilities Maintenance/Building Trades Technician position at the Outdoor Education Center complex and reports to the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor (Facility/Utility Crew Supervisor) whose office is located on main campus in Fetzer Hall.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Management Preferences

  • Working knowledge of plant maintenance procedures used in landscape installation and grounds maintenance.
  • Experience in supervision or team lead.
  • Basic Knowledge of Environmental Safety.
  • Basic knowledge of small equipment used in landscaping and building maintenance.
  • Demonstrated excellence in customer service and communication.

Required Licenses/Certifications Special Physical/Mental Requirements

Some lifting required to complete various tasks.
