Job Summary

Provide general assistance to the Facilities team with routine building upkeep, basic repairs, and project support during a temporary summer assignment. This role works under close supervision and focuses on safe, entry-level tasks such as moving materials, basic painting/patching, installing signage, minor hardware replacements, and keeping work areas clean and organized.

This temporary summer assignment is expected to run approximately May-August (dates flexible based on business need). Typical hours are Monday-Friday, approximately 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Occasional overtime may be available as approved by the Facilities Manager. Travel is not expected; if needed, it will be limited and coordinated by the Facilities team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Facilities staff with routine maintenance and project work as assigned (work performed under supervision).
  • Move, stage, and organize materials, tools, and supplies; keep work areas clean and safe.
  • Support basic work order completion by documenting tasks performed and communicating status to the Facilities team.
  • Follow instructions, posted procedures, and safety guidance; ask questions when unclear.
  • Perform basic repairs under supervision (e.g., replace simple hardware, tighten fasteners, hang small fixtures/signage).
  • Assist with basic painting, patching, sanding, and cleanup activities (no advanced construction work required).
  • Help with light exterior tasks as trained (e.g., sweeping, litter pickup, simple inspections/reporting issues).
  • Support basic interior upkeep (e.g., minor touch-up painting, replacing ceiling tiles, simple drywall patching, cleaning up after repairs).
  • Work with the Facilities team to prioritize daily tasks and learn basic maintenance best practices.
  • Install or replace interior and exterior signage as directed.
  • Follow all safety rules and company policies, including proper PPE use and tool handling.
  • Perform other related duties as requested, directed, or assigned within the scope of a temporary summer helper role.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Skills:

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including basic safety information and labels.
  • Basic math skills (counting, measuring, reading a tape measure) and attention to detail.
  • Basic documentation skills (able to write clear notes, complete simple checklists, and communicate status).
  • Willingness to learn basic maintenance tasks and use simple hand tools safely (training provided).
  • Comfortable performing physical work, including lifting/carrying, standing, bending, and working indoors/outdoors.
  • Dependable attendance and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work safely around equipment and in industrial environments; willingness to complete required safety training.
  • Able to manage assigned tasks with guidance and ask for help when needed.

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • Willingness to complete required safety training and follow all PPE requirements.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the worksite.
  • High school diploma/GED preferred, or currently enrolled student (high school, trade, or college). Prior maintenance or construction exposure is helpful but not required.

Preferred:

  • Any prior experience with basic hand tools, painting, or facility upkeep; interest in skilled trades is a plus.

Working Conditions:

Work Environment:

  • Plant ambient temperature matches the outside temperature
  • Potential for temperatures exceeding 120F when working near ceiling, in vulcanizers, or in boiler room.
  • Work in high places (near ceiling, carbon black system, on the roofs of all buildings on campus).
  • Dust and Fumes from water treatment chemicals.
  • Airborne dust (mica dust, chemicals in mixing).
  • Use of chemicals: carbon black, spray solvent, lubricating oil, etc.
  • Hydraulic and lubricating oils.
  • Pinch hazard on moving mechanical parts (conveyors, production equipment, shop equipment, fans and v-belts).
  • Hearing protection is required in specified areas of the plant.
  • Respirators required in specified areas of the plant.

Time Worked:

  • Hours Worked: Typically, up to 40 hours per week during the summer assignment; overtime may be available as approved.
  • Days of Week Worked: Typically, Monday through Friday; occasional weekend work may occur with advance notice.

Shifts Worked: Daylight (approximately 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).
