Facilities Mechanical Engineer

Location: Wilton, CT

Position Summary

Our client is seeking an experienced Facilities Mechanical Engineer for a contract-to-hire opportunity supporting advanced semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Wilton, Connecticut. This role will work closely with client representatives, system owners, contractors, and site personnel in a fast-paced, highly technical environment.

The Facilities Mechanical Engineer will support projects of varying size and complexity, including system assessments, scope development, engineering design, construction support, and integration of facility mechanical systems. Responsibilities will include developing recommendations, Basis of Design (BOD) documents, Statements of Work (SOW), design documents, construction documents, and specifications through the project delivery process.

The engineer will oversee engineering and construction activities related to facility mechanical systems, including HVAC, process cooling water, wastewater, general and acid/ammonia exhaust, fire protection, plumbing, process piping, and equipment systems. Projects may involve both retrofits of existing building systems and the design and implementation of new systems.

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly organized, collaborative, and technically strong engineer who enjoys working on complex industrial facilities and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Establish and develop project scopes, client specifications, standards, and design requirements for complex manufacturing tools and facility infrastructure mechanical systems.
  • Develop engineering and construction documents for the installation, modification, and integration of mechanical facility systems.
  • Perform technical engineering activities including code assessments and interpretation, HAZOP reviews, scope development, design, and engineering oversight.
  • Design and oversee piping and ducting systems for equipment heating, cooling, exhaust, process chemicals, and process gases.
  • Support retrofit projects involving existing building systems, including engineering calculations, equipment and component sizing, selection, and specification.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, equipment installation, commissioning, and integration into manufacturing facilities.
  • Serve as the mechanical representative on multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Understand and evaluate existing site systems and develop upgrade and improvement options in collaboration with system and area owners.
  • Review and interpret P&IDs, PFDs, layout drawings, details, equipment plans, and other technical design documents.
  • Collaborate with trades, contractors, subcontractors, system owners, and client representatives to develop effective design solutions.
  • Gather and analyze information to provide design options while balancing cost, schedule, technical requirements, and project scope.
  • Lead and participate in stakeholder meetings to drive decisions, establish action items, and maintain project progress.
  • Review vendor submittal packages for compliance with client requirements, specifications, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Provide field support and interact directly with construction personnel and subcontractors.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Minimum of 10 years of practical mechanical facilities design engineering experience.
  • Experience with a variety of mechanical facility systems, including HVAC, hydronics, process piping, exhaust, plumbing, and related systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with design project delivery processes.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and responsibilities.
  • Leadership experience and the ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge and application of ASME standards, including ASME B31.3, building codes, fire codes, ASHRAE standards, and other applicable codes and regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of the practices and procedures related to the specification and selection of mechanical equipment and components.
  • Experience reviewing vendor submittal packages against client requirements and specifications.
  • Field experience working with subcontractors, contractors, and construction personnel.
  • Must be able to provide onsite support in Wilton, CT.

Preferred Qualifications

  • EIT or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • At least 5 years of experience working as a Facilities Engineer.
  • Working knowledge of design deliverables, including P&IDs, PFDs, details, equipment plans, and related documentation.
  • Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and/or BIM 360.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Forward-thinking approach with a desire to learn best practices and contribute innovative ideas.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across a variety of teams and disciplines.
  • Passion for buildings, facilities, engineering, and construction.
