The Fabrication Labs Specialist coordinates the daily operations of the School of Architecture and Built Environment's Digital Fabrication Lab, Digital Ceramics Lab, and Textile Lab. The Fabrication Labs enable students to utilize 3D printers, large format plotters, fabric printers, ceramic 3D printers, industrial sewing machines, and laser cutters for their projects.

This position manages the staffing and supervision, helps students and faculty with using the labs, manages the maintenance and operation of equipment, designs support services for student and faculty use of the equipment, and creates safe and organized lab environments. This position coordinates with the Director of Fabrication Labs for the business operations for the labs including managing budgets, coordinating schedules and workshops with faculty, and hiring, training, and supervising student employees. This position works to advocate for and support the incorporation of fabrication into the curricula of the school as well as participating in the research and development of new approaches to fabrication in support of the mission of the school. This position may teach or co-instruct one course per semester with a focus on fabrication, depending on school needs.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree with at least 2 years of experience in a digital fabrication/makerspace environment.

OR

  • High School diploma or equivalent and 8 years of operations management experience in a shop/makerspace or design/build environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master''s degree in architecture, design, or a related field.

  • Experience operating Potterbots or other ceramic 3D printers

  • Experience maintaining and serving industrial sewing machines

  • Experience with computational workflows in Rhinoceros and Grasshopper

  • Experience developing and implementing training programs suitable for new and advanced users.

  • Experience teaching students how to operate fabrication resources

  • Supervisory experience.

  • CPR and First Aid certified.

  • Proficient in Rhinoceros and Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, students, staff, and vendors in a diverse environment.

  • Knowledge of digital fabrication, including file preparation for 3D printing and laser cutting.

  • Experience maintaining and servicing digital fabrication equipment.

  • Experience with architectural model building.

  • Ability to perform tasks involving acute concentration and hand-eye coordination.

  • Ability to lift 30lbs and move heavy items around with relative frequency.

  • Exceptional teaching, mentoring, and interpersonal skills.
