General Atomics Electromagnetics Systems, Inc. (GA-EMS) is seeking an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as the Vice President of Engineering & Innovation, located in San Diego, CA. This strategic position, reporting directly to the President of GA-EMS, offers an exciting opportunity to shape the culture of a world-class organization and drive initiatives that align with GA-EMS’s mission and business objectives.


As the Vice President of Engineering & Innovation, you will play a pivotal role in developing and executing the company’s strategic plan in collaboration with executive leadership and senior leaders. You will lead efforts to meet commitments on existing business while fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration. This role demands a forward-thinking leader who combines technical expertise with strategic insight to deliver impactful results.


Responsible for portfolio of engineers and scientists that provide matrixed capabilities for space systems, weapons programs, nuclear, advanced material, maritime programs, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of War (DoW), NASA, commercial and Title 50 intelligence customers. Responsible for financial management, manning, personnel staffing, technical resolution and basis of estimates for the business. This candidate will lead and mentor technical fellows, Directors and Senior Directors, driving engineering performance, customer interactions, high level technical risk decisions, and collaborating with the Strategic Development and Profit/Loss organizations to win new programs. Bimonthly out of state travel required.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES


+ Oversee all phases of engineering &innovation from conceptualization through completion, including identifying design disclosure for acquisition, planning, detail design development, manufacturability, qualification, to ensure quality, business, and financial objectives are attained. Maintaining a culture of cross matrixed lessons learned and overall use of all engineering personnel from the East Coast to West Coast, to Southwest to Southeast to New England and Colorado and New Mexico.

+ Develop and manage technical plans, some of which may be unprecedented, across distinctive products while serving multiple customers. GA-EMS performs work from undersea to space, from directed energy to optical communication, from missiles to projectiles, from reactors to radioisotope powered batteries, from battery systems, fuel cell systems to nuclear reactors, to advanced materials to high power, higher energy applications. Candidate must have technical knowledge of these domains to be able to manage 800-1000 engineers and scientists across the business.

+ Consult with executive management to develop and implement current, annual and long-term technical, schedule, quality, business, and financial objectives for the program(s) and participate in the development of Group/Company objectives with a long-range forecast.

+ Oversee the development of design concepts, criteria, and engineering efforts for product research, development, testing, and integration as with the team of engineers and scientists. Ensure proper training is enforced and staffing is anticipatory and in place.

+ Actively participate weekly in New Employee Orientation (NEO) sessions as meet a leader opportunity.

+ Support LDP and Maverick programs and support PEAK. Select and pick names for the L&OP initiatives including LEAP and ALPS.

+ Actively support Board of Advisers preparation and presentations.

+ Influence the decisions of senior leaders both within and outside the company on matters of high significance. Represent the organization in relations with customers, and business and non-business communities. Act as primary spokesperson on technical issues.

+ Influence the technical preparation of proposals, basis of estimates, material and contractor selection, proposal work statements and specifications, and operating budgets. Support contract acquisitions, negotiations and modifications as required by P&L leadership.

+ As program issues are highlighted, ensure balance of resources and provide leadership in developing technical solutions such as re-allocation of engineering resources.

+ Support the Strategic Development team with the development of new business opportunities and expansion of existing business opportunities. Support Group management in pursuing business partnerships, alliances, and joint ventures that enhance the capabilities of the EMS Group and which may result in new products, programs and business opportunities.

+ Oversee the development of and ensure the security of proprietary technology and maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

+ Other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:


+ Typically requires a master's or PhD in engineering, science, or a related technical field as well as fifteen or more years of progressively complex engineering administration experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.

+ Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, strong analytical and planning skills, and well-developed communication, writing and presentation skills.

+ Strong business acumen, strategic thinking, and ability to navigate high-level challenges.

+ Proven managerial expertise and a track record of leading complex initiatives that deliver measurable success.

+ Candidate must have a proven background demonstrating concept development and design development in a TS, SAP, and SCI programs and must be able to quickly get briefed to these classification levels.

+ Proven ability to lead large teams, manage complex projects, and collaborate across all engineering departments. Experience leading an organization for at least five years with 150 people or more.

+ 10 (preferably 15) years of experience as an engineer on LRIP or production programs.

+ Demonstrates detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of first principles, concepts, and practice as well as comprehensive technical management and leadership skills organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.

+ Ability to gain trust of customer and respected by internal stakeholders for technical expertise and leadership.

+ Must possess the ability to use advanced technologies and applications that apply advance principles, theories, and concepts across program requirements.

+ Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts to find highly innovative and ingenious solutions to unusually complex problems. Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives.
