Under a combination of administrative and executive direction, provides leadership and directs the overall operation of the hospital’s behavioral health services consistent with policies and objectives of the hospital and its advisory or Governing Board. In this regard, the Executive Director of Behavioral Health Operations plans, organizes, applies, directs, controls and evaluates all resources (human resources, facilities, equipment, capital and similar resources) invested in the service line. This role will use all resources to generate measurable returns to benefit the company, the community, the physician and most of all, the patient.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develops short and long range management and organization plans to define responsibilities and business activities consistent with hospital goals and objectives.
  • Develops systems to integrate behavioral health services within the medicine systems of care.
  • Develops annual Management Plan for the HCA BH Service Line.
  • Provides administrative direction for the recruitment, employment, development and termination of all service-line employees.
  • Negotiates professional service contracts.
  • Oversees the development and revision of personnel practices and policies for the service line.
  • Approves performance appraisals and wage modifications, reviews and resolves employee grievances and makes suggestion as appropriate.
  • Maintains primary responsibility for medical staff relations and development both inside and outside the hospital.
  • Acts as liaison between the hospital advisory or Governing Board, the medical staff and the service line.
  • Establishes and attends meetings to provide pertinent information related to the hospital operations and the provisions of quality health care.
  • Prepares and presents operational and financial reports as required in regularly scheduled meetings and committees, as well as for the Hospital CEO and leadership team.
  • Interprets public policy, economic developments and public opinion in meeting organizational goals.
  • Participates in hospital associations and health care professional organizations.
  • Works with the CFO’s office and related financial operations to ensure realization of fiscal business plan.
  • Reviews and approves all financial reports, budgets, managed care contracts and major expenditures.
  • Directs, establishes, reviews and adjusts charges for services.
  • Maintains service line accreditation and licensure standards of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals, Medicare, Medicaid, state licensure and regulatory agencies and similar organizations.
  • Maintains high quality in the hospital operation by coordinating the hospital personnel in connection with the loss control, quality improvement and quality assurance programs and such other quality control programs as may be established.
  • Serves as primary representative to a third-parties such as examiners and planning agencies

  • Develops relationships and affiliations, which promote the success of public mental health in the surrounding communities.
  • Responsible for local, regional and state coordination with other human service agencies as clinically or administratively needed.
  • Serves on local community behavioral health boards.

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree required
  • 5+ years Inpatient Behavioral Health Leadership experience required
  • 10+ years behavioral health experience
  • Work Experience in lieu of Masters Degree
