Unity Search has been retained by a fast-growing, entrepreneurial minded diversified real estate company in Central Dallas in its search for an Executive Director of Accounting.  This role will serve as the right hand to the CFO and will lead the accounting function for the organization.  Compensation for this role will include a competitive salary + a strong bonus potential + profit sharing/co-invest plan that can also be quite lucrative.

Some key areas of responsibility include:
  1. Leadership and team development
    • Provide unified leadership across the JV accounting group and the corporate accounting group, ensuring both teams are appropriately staffed, motivated, and held accountable to performance standards
    • Establish clear goals, performance expectations, and development plans for all direct and indirect reports
    • Foster a high-performance, collaborative culture that can sustain the company's fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
    • Identify staffing gaps and resource needs proactively; lead recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts in coordination with HR and the CFO
    • Coach and mentor the Corporate Controller and JV Accounting Managers to elevate their leadership capabilities and career development
    • Conduct regular one-on-ones, team meetings, and performance reviews with direct reports
  2. Joint Venture Accounting Oversight
    • Oversee joint venture accounting across multiple different platforms
    • Oversee joint venture accounting across all five different active platforms
    • Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and consistency of financial reporting across all JV entities and investor reporting packages
    • Review and approve JV financial statements, waterfall calculations, capital calls, distributions, and investor communications prepared by the accounting managers
    • Monitor compliance with JV partnership agreements, including promote structures, preferred return hurdles, and reporting obligations
    • Coordinate with asset management, development, and legal teams to ensure accounting treatment is aligned with deal structures and documentation
    • Oversee audit and tax preparation processes for all JV entities in coordination with external advisors
  3. Corporate Accounting Oversight
    • Oversee the corporate accounting group including general ledger, treasury, accounts payable, cost allocations, and financial reporting
    • Review and approve the monthly, quarterly, and annual corporate financial statements and management reports
    • Ensure cost allocations across entities, platforms, and the family office are accurate, defensible, and consistently applied
    • Oversee treasury operations including cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, and liquidity management in coordination with the Treasury Manager
    • Ensure AP workflows are controlled, timely, and properly approved, and that vendor relationships are managed appropriately
    • Manage corporate audit and tax processes in coordination with external CPA and advisory firms
  4. Systems, Technology & Process Improvement
    • Assess the current state of accounting systems across both groups and identify gaps, redundancies, and inefficiencies
    • Lead evaluation, selection, and implementation of new accounting platforms, reporting tools, and AI-assisted automation solutions
    • Stay current on emerging technology relevant to real estate accounting — including AI-driven close processes, automated reconciliation, and intelligent reporting dashboards
    • Build and enforce standardized processes, controls, and documentation across both accounting groups to support scalability and auditability
    • Drive adoption of shared tools and best practices across JV and corporate teams to improve consistency and efficiency
  5. Financial Reporting & Compliance
    • Ensure all financial reporting obligations are met across JV entities, corporate, and family office structures on time and in compliance with applicable standards
    • Research and stay current on evolving accounting standards (GAAP, ASC updates), real estate-specific reporting requirements, and tax regulations applicable to the company's platforms
    • Proactively communicate upcoming regulatory or reporting changes to the CFO and lead the team's preparation and response
    • Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, legal counsel, and banking partners as they relate to accounting matters
    • Maintain and improve internal controls, ensuring a strong control environment across both groups
  6. Strategic Partnership with CFO
    • Serve as the CFO's primary operational partner on all accounting and finance matters; proactively surface issues, risks, and opportunities rather than waiting to be asked
    • Translate strategic initiatives and deal activity into accounting requirements and resource plans
    • Prepare and present accounting performance updates, staffing assessments, and system recommendations to the CFO
    • Act as a key voice in evaluating new platforms, deal structures, or business lines from an accounting infrastructure standpoint

Some requirements are:
  • CPA highly preferred
  • 12-20 years of progressive accounting experience
    • At least 5 years of senior leadership experience overseeing a multi-person accounting team
    • Public accounting foundation a plus
  • Some exposure to real estate accounting required
    • Exposure to accounting for different asset classes (multifamily, industrial, commercial, etc.) highly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience managing joint venture (JV) accounting, including partnership agreement compliance, waterfall calculations, capital account maintenance, and investor reporting highly preferred
  • Experience with corporate accounting functions, including financial reporting, cost allocations, and treasury operations
  • Track record of successfully evaluating and implementing new accounting systems or technology platform
  • Experience in a high-growth, entrepreneurial or private company environment preferred over a pure institutional background.
