Job Description Summary

The purpose of this job is to serve as a liaison to City departments, businesses, community agencies, and festival organizers in the planning and coordination of special events. This position guides event organizers and citizens through the special event application process to ensure events on public property are conducted safely, successfully, and in compliance with City requirements. The Event Services Specialist coordinates with a Special Events Committee to review applications and support decision-making regarding special events within the City of Columbia.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description
  • Processes special events applications.
  • Oversees special use permit process.
  • Communicates with City departments, community organizations, businesses, and event organizers regarding special events.
  • Draft operational agreements, reports, and correspondence.
  • Creates and maintains accurate records.
  • Plans, organizes, and implements activities, programs, and special events.
  • Creates and presents reports and recommendations.
  • Processes payments and deposits for special event application fees and applications.
  • Responds to inquiries, concerns, and complaints.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

No supervisory authority. Work may require providing guidance and training to others.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality Management, Events Management, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 1 to 3 years' experience in event planning or a related field.


Licenses or Certifications
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Certified Tourism Ambassador within 6 months of hire.
