Job Overview:
The position of an estimator plays an extremely crucial part directly towards the company's finances. An estimator needs to focus his or her attention entirely on accurate pricing and numbers. Getting projects awarded relies on the estimating department. The estimating department is the backbone in any construction business.
Reports To:The Estimator will report to the general manager and/or project manager.
Estimators Responsibilities and Duties:
- The estimator is responsible for estimating labor, materials, and equipment costs for each project accurately, as well as creating quotes and proposals on projects for existent clients, and new clients. If a change order is required for a current project, the estimator will estimate the cost for the additional scope of work, as per project.
- The estimator is responsible for staying up to date on material costs, equipment rental costs, and labor increases on a monthly basis.
- The estimator will need to maintain the estimating excel template, and debug any errors if needed, and keep all material, equipment, and labor pricing up to date in the excel template.
- The estimator will need to keep track of projects lost or awarded after estimation.
- The estimator will need to perform multiple follow-ups after sending out an estimate: 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, then 3 months, etc.
- The estimator will need to draft up draw schedules after approval of a quote or proposal, and send it out to the client after the general managers review.
- The estimator will then submit the draw schedule into Knowify, an invoicing system and purchase orders software.
- Before the start of each project, the estimator will need to request permit sets, MOs, and truss plans/engineering from General Contractors or owners.
- The estimator will create labor contracts for each crew per phase per project, and make sure we don't go over budget.
- The estimator will create legible material takeoffs per phase per project.
- The estimator will need to print out plans for each project according to the general managers instructions.
- Whenever needed, the estimator may place material orders with approval from the general manager or project manager.
- The estimator will have the authority to release trusses, major flooring systems, concrete orders, and rebar orders with approval from the general manager or project manager
- If there is inflation in the economy, the estimator will calculate price increases for specific materials and/or labor prices and draft up price increase invoices upon the general managers approval.
- Upon the general managers or project managers request, the estimator will send RFI emails to the owner or General Contractor of the project.
- If the workload comes to a slowdown, the general manager may send the estimator onsite to deliver a few materials or wait on an order to be delivered a jobsite.
Qualifications:
Education level: High School/GED or greater.
Field Experience: 2 years or more.
Specific skills:
- Basic Math
- Excel Spreadsheets, Word Documents, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, PlanSwift, and Navigation of windows computer.
