Job Information Open to the general public, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - Technicians (IBEW-Tech), Local 1547 members, and any current Municipal Employees. This position is represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - Technicians (IBEW-Tech), Local 1547, and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

HOURS OF WORK: Shifts vary; Monday to Sunday

LOCATION: 3701 Dr MLK Jr Avenue

Applicants shall be referred and considered for this position in the order as follows per the Collective Bargaining Agreement:

Internal applicants currently working under the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - Technicians (IBEW-Tech), Local 1547 Collective Bargaining Agreement Local union dispatched applicants External applicants and other current Municipal employees not covered under this agreement

Example of Duties:

Performs inspections, diagnosis, and/or troubleshoots to determine cause and solution required for a variety of commercial and light-duty vehicles; uses sound judgment to efficiently and safely accomplish complete scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs of the entire power-train, interfaced electronic controls and systems, heating and ventilation systems, fare boxes, hydraulic system, braking, suspension, and major and minor overhauls critical to preserving the safety and/or integrity of Public Transportation Department (PTD) buses and other PTD vehicles and equipment.

Ensures the quality and expediency of all work performed; responds to service calls in the field during all types of weather to repair and/or recover vehicles; utilizes MOA Maintenance Management Software (MMS) to document work performed and a wide variety of hand and power tools to accomplish tasks; must establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and others to promote a safe, clean, and harmonious work environment.

Cleans and maintains shop work areas. Must maintain regular time and attendance standards. Performs other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences:

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and completion of an approved journeyman mechanic apprenticeship program, and four (4) years of automotive, construction equipment, transit bus, and truck maintenance and repair experience.

OR

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and five (5) years of automotive, construction equipment, transit bus, and truck maintenance and repair experience.

Must possess and/or obtain:

  • Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction at time of hire.
  • Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.

If you do not have a valid Class B CDL with Passenger endorsement at time of application, you must:

  • At time of application, have a valid State of Alaska Driver's License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
  • At time of hire, have a valid State of Alaska Driver's License & State of Alaska Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP).
  • Within 120 days of hire, have a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction at time of hire.

Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.

  • OSHA 30-hour General Industry certificate
  • OSHA State of Alaska Forklift Certification
  • AssetWorks Academy for Government Fleet
  • Cummins and/or Allison training module completion
  • ASE Transit Bus Certification completion

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicants Alaska Drivers License, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Drivers License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicants Alaska Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDLB) or higher, with Passenger endorsement, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Drivers License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug screening prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice. If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the satisfactory review and completion of the Previous Employer Alcohol & Drug Test Information Forms.

Names, addresses, and phone numbers for positions that required Department of Transportation testing for the last two years will be required in compliance with § 40.25 and § 382.405 (f) and (h). All required certifications and/or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference:

Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual's command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service.

The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
