Purpose of the Position

The City of Wausau is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator to help build, maintain, and improve the streets, utilities, and public infrastructure our community depends on every day. From road construction and excavation to snow removal and emergency response, youll operate a variety of heavy construction equipment while working alongside an experienced Public Works team that takes pride in quality workmanship, safety, and serving the community.

This full-time, year-round position starts at $24.44 per hour or higher depending on qualifications. The regular schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This position includes a comprehensive benefits package, Wisconsin Retirement System participation, paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, and opportunities for continued training and professional development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As an Equipment Operator, youll play a key role in maintaining and improving Wausaus public infrastructure. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Safely operating a variety of heavy construction equipment used in roadway, utility, and infrastructure maintenance projects.
  • Performing grading, excavation, paving, drainage, snow and ice control, and other Public Works operations.
  • Inspecting and performing routine servicing and minor maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Evaluating job site conditions and selecting appropriate equipment and work methods to complete work safely and efficiently.
  • Supporting construction and maintenance projects through equipment operation and manual labor as needed.
  • Responding to severe weather, emergencies, and other situations requiring Public Works assistance.
  • Working collaboratively with an experienced team committed to safety, quality workmanship, and exceptional public service.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered, applicants must have:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) or more years of experience in roadway maintenance, construction, excavation, utility work, heavy equipment operation, or a related field.
  • A valid Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with N endorsement.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience operating heavy construction equipment such as:

  • Motor graders
  • Excavators/backhoes
  • Front-end loaders
  • Skid steers
  • Dump trucks
  • Similar heavy construction equipment

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may also be considered.
