JOB SUMMARY

The incumbent, under the guidance of the Street Maintenance Supervisor, operates equipment safely and efficiently to maintain city streets in good repair.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times. All other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or department director.

  • Drive/operate various trucks and equipment as assigned.
  • Conduct minor maintenance and upkeep of assigned equipment.
  • Participate in construction and maintenance activities related to assigned equipment operation.
  • Inspect and clean catch basins, pipes, drainage inlets, and junction boxes.
  • Operate rod machine to open driveway tile and catch basins.
  • Clean up for tree cutting crew.
  • Check storm drains to insure they are open and running.
  • Install driveway culverts.
  • Operate chainsaw and jack hammer as required.
  • Build and place gabion baskets for drainage improvement.
  • Cut down dead trees when necessary.
  • Cut back trees and bushes causing sight obstruction.
  • Clean out concrete swales with bobcat as needed.
  • Participate in salt and sand operations.
  • Place rip-rap for drainage.
  • Operate various tractors for mowing and spraying ROW.
  • Form and finish concrete as needed.
  • Place traffic control barricades as needed.
  • Pour and finish concrete. (EOII, EOIII)
  • Install concrete storm drains and rip rap. (EOIII)
  • May be subject to after-hours callouts during bad weather conditions. This may include operating salt/sand spreader when needed. (EOI, EOII, EOIII)
  • Dig or reshape ditches with to grade with a backhoe. (EOIII)
  • Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications

Equipment Operator in Training:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and must obtain required CDL within 9 months of hire. Must sit for written exam within 3 months of hire; must pass written exam within 6 months of hire; and must pass driving exam within 9 months of hire.
  • No experience necessary. On the job training for transitioning to higher EO levels.

Preferred Qualifications

Equipment Operator (EO) I:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have valid Class B CDL w/air brake endorsement.
  • No experience necessary.

May be required to operate: chainsaw/jackhammer/tractors/dump trucks

Equipment Operator (EO) II:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have valid Class A CDL w/air brake endorsement.
  • 6 months previous experience in operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.
  • May be required to operate above equipment plus: tractor with 42' trailer/tri-axle dump truck/tractor with flex-wing mower.

Equipment Operator (EO) III:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have valid Class B or C CDL w/air brake endorsement upon hire. Must have or be able to obtain a valid Class A CDL w/air brake and tanker endorsement with 9 months of hire.
  • 12 months previous experience in operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.
  • May be required to operate above equipment plus: road grader/dozer/backhoe/vac truck.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department.
  • Problem solving, speed and accuracy are required to perform the duties of this position.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required.
  • The incumbent must also be able to operate surveying and welding equipment.

POSITION DESIGNATIONS

This position is designated as essential during inclement weather events. City services will be maintained during inclement weather, such as heavy snow or ice storms and all essential employees are expected to report to work due to the critical functions of the position. This position is not able to work remotely.

This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties.

This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random DOT drug and alcohol screenings and/or non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings (a safety/security sensitive position is one in which a momentary lapse in attention may result in injury or death of another person).

Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also required.

The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 100 pounds.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
