Equipment Operator II - Water Services

It takes a skilled professional to operate heavy equipment and help maintain critical water infrastructure-and we're looking for you to bring those talents to the City of Chesapeake as an Equipment Operator II.

In this role, you'll be a key member of the Water Services team, using your experience and technical skills to support the installation, repair, and maintenance of the City's water system while making a real impact in the community.

What You'll Do

  • Operate heavy equipment, including backhoes, dump trucks, tanker trucks, and vacuum trucks
  • Install and repair water service lines and assist with water main repairs
  • Restore job sites by removing debris and repairing grass, concrete, and asphalt surfaces
  • Complete administrative and documentation tasks related to assigned work

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires completion of 10th grade in high school. High school diploma, GED OR specialized vocational training is preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this class requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required. Specialized certifications may be required based on department assigned.

  • Applicant must obtain a tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Basic knowledge of pipe repair techniques and maintenance is preferred.

Selected candidates will be eligible for $3,000 sign-on bonus and a $4,000 annual CDL Stipend (if applicable)!

This position is approved for a Voluntary Career Progression program that allows employees to be advanced to the appropriate next level position with their current division.

This position is deemed an Alpha position so you must have the ability to work in any emergency situations due to weather or operational issues. Must be available for inclement weather, mandatory standby duty, and overtime as needed.
