Department Information

Located in Alamosa, Adams State University is a state-supported institution in the San Luis Valley, South-central Colorado located two and a half hours north of Santa Fe, NM and four hours south of Denver, CO. The university is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution and is a regional education provider. The San Luis Valley is the largest alpine basin in North America, surrounded by the beautiful Sangre de Cristo and the San Juan Mountain Ranges. Adams State is the perfect place to study, work and live. This work unit supports the agency activities by driving students and staff utilizing State Fleet Vehicles to and from events or activities needed by Adams State University. Unit also completes maintenance and detailing of all vehicles and equipment in support of providing a safe reliable transportation service for Adams State University. Work involves driving of commercial (CDL) and non-commercial vehicles for ASU events including maintenance and detail of all vehicles and equipment.

Description of Job

Preforms pre-trip inspections and documentation on all fleet and equipment. Performs an organized operation of fleet maintenance on vehicles and equipment, auto detail, repairs, preventative maintenance, inspections, associated records and reports and work environment. Availability to assist in some after hour emergency situations such as vehicle breakdowns. Provides excellent customer service and professionalism. Assist with scheduling and coordination of fleet calendar as necessary. Position assists

mechanic with all transportation and equipment needs.

Job Specific Duties:

  • Bus or vehicle driving

  • Safely drives commercial vehicles (bus/vans/shuttles) transporting passengers to and from destinations required by Adams State University departments. Several overnights, multiple days will be required for athletic events during peak seasons.

  • Performs all inspections required by law and all documents required.

  • Performs all driver safety, traffic laws, rules and regulations required.

  • Ability to assist in situations sometimes after normal hours with vehicle break down issues or possible staff/student rescue with all transportation.

  • Provide excellent customer service and professionalism to all departments interacting with Fleet Services.

  • Performs and provide logs on equipment and vehicle inspections (pre-trip) daily.

  • Vehicle/ Equipment Maintenance

  • Maintains, cleans, details, performs minor repairs on fleet vehicles and equipment.

  • Position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining bus, and passenger vehicles.

  • Detailing vehicles

  • Including washing and drying of interiors and exteriors, cleaning floors/carpets, seats, glass in and out, engine compartments, wheels and tires including tread inspections.

  • Light maintenance-includes oil changes, oil and air filter changes, fuel filters, wiper blades, light bulbs. Adding fluids such as oils, windshield wash, diesel exhaust fluid, antifreeze. Small equipment oil changes and light repairs such as changing mower blades, flat tires, power washing.0

  • Mechanic Assistant

  • Transporting vehicles to vendors, picking up parts and supplies. In the absence of the mechanic-cover phones when needed.

  • Ensure all tools, materials, and machinery are secured, and returned to designated storage areas post-job

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience Only:

Two (2) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

Special Requirements:

This position requires a Class B commercial license with a passenger endorsement and any requirements including drug screening and DOT physicals.

Required Competencies:

  • Commercial Driving: Experience safely driving large buses, shuttles, and vans, including comfort with long-distance, weekend, and overnight trips
  • Basic Mechanic Skills: Ability to handle light maintenance like oil changes, replacing filters, changing flat tires, and topping off fluids.
  • Vehicle Care & Detailing: Skill in deep-cleaning, washing, and detailing vehicles inside and out.
  • Safety & Inspections: Knowledge of how to perform daily safety checks (pre-trip inspections) and keep accurate logs.
  • Emergency Problem-Solving: Ability to handle vehicle breakdowns or roadside emergencies calmly, sometimes outside of normal business hours.
  • Customer Service & Professionalism: A helpful attitude when working with university departments, students, and outside vendors.
  • Shop Support: Basic phone and coordination skills to help cover the office and pick up parts when the main mechanic is away.

A successful candidate will demonstrate responsible professional conduct at all times; will be punctual and observe scheduled work hours; will not abuse leave and will follow call-in procedures. The successful candidate will also follow safety guidelines and use personal protective equipment, when required.
